Categories: Truth

There are three sides to every story, his side, her side, and the truth. But it is possible that we do not even know what the “truth” is. So, is there only one truth or many truths? There are many facts in the world dating back to very long ago up until the present day, meaning there are many different truths. But it is possible that there is only one truth for everything.

There are various ways to look at this debate because of all the possibilities of “truths”.

I believe that there are multiple truths in the world because there are many different topics and situations. Doctors know many different facts or “truths” about the anatomy of a human being. Psychologists know many different facts about how the brain works with our emotions. So, it is easy to say that there are, many truths. I do not believe that there can only be one truth existing for every single thing.

Things can be false as well, such as an elephant cannot fly and you could not climb Mt. Everest in five minutes. These situations are false because they defy the laws of physics or are just considered untrue or impossible. There are so many truths out there ranging from species that are capable of doing something another species cannot to the fact that a little girl does not like lolly pops. These statements are true because they are correct, they are the right answer. I believe that is what “truth” means because truth is based upon accuracy and factual evidence.

I believe truth is the same as a fact because facts are true. Facts are something that can be backed up by true statements so facts are definitively connected to the truth. I’m sure people have questioned if the facts we have are true and how it is possible to know whats true and what is not. I agree with the philosophy of William James who believes truth acts as the scientific method. If it is tested and experimented and comes out being a true statement then it is considered true. But, if it does not work then it is false. I believe this because that is how things have been tested to be true for years and years and it seems to work out quite alright. We have discovered new experiments, new species, new ways of surgical procedures, and new “truths”. Scientists and researchers have tested things over and over in order for them to let the world know that these experimental ideas are now new ways of living.

I also believe William James philosophy where he believes there can be variations of different understandings of the same truth. So, for example, if me and my best friend both like chocolate, it is true that we both like the same thing, but we understand it or taste it in a different way. I believe this to be true because this philosophy could associate with any truth there is out there. People can interpret the truth in a numerous amount of ways, but still know what is true. However, every person in the world has very different lives which means we are all going to care about many different things and therefore we will have different understandings of “truth”. We will not all agree on what is true or false, what is right and wrong, but there is already evidence to support the true or false statements. Some people do not even believe in true facts, they believe they are false, such as some people do not believe in the moon landing because there is certain pieces of the situation that seem a little off or impossible. But, we have gone to space and back and we have landed on the moon at some point in that journey. Every person in the world is not always going to agree on the same truths but we have the evidence to support these truths.

I do not believe that there can only be one version of the truth. There are many things that can make something true like a woman who has a uterus which makes her defined as a woman. Also, she has long hair and breasts, which makes her a woman. The fact that she goes through a menstruation period every month, defines her as a woman. Also, if two kids are fighting because the older brother hit him, they are going to have two different versions of the story, but in the end the true fact is that the brother was hit by the other brother. There are many aspects of a thing that makes it to be true. So, there cannot be only one version of the truth.

A big question people may ask is, how do we know what is the truth? I believe the way we can correctly know what is the “truth” is when a situation is proven multiple times. For instance, the fact that dolphins are mammals because they possess a similar DNA to what a mammal is or the fact that birds migrate for the winter to warmer climates. These situations have been turned into fact because they repeat. It is a repetitive situation or theory that creates a truth because time and time again it is proven correct. If something is consistent in the same exact thing for a numerous amount of times I believe that to be true. How else could we figure out how something could be true? We could not base it on a one time occurrence and state that it is true all the time, every time. That would be insane to base everything off of a one time “truth”. Everything would change about what we view as true and things would eventually spiral into falsehood and change truth again.

I also agree partially with the philosophy of Bertrand Russell who states that things can only be true or false, there cannot be an in-between. I believe this in the sense of facts such as the human body cannot intake alcohol at a fast rate and at a large rate. This is proven to be true and is proven to produce massive hangovers. This situation could not be partially false because a person could not partially ruin their liver from it. They are going to ruin it regardless if they are to drink at that rate. However, there are problems with this philosophy because there are many things out there that we do not know for sure. For example, we do not know everything true about the ocean, we know some parts and some species, but we have barely made a dent in the research. This also brings us back to the question of whether or not we can know truth because we know what we think are facts and we have different perceptions of the world and how to perceive it, but we do not know the outside of that. Also, there are facts about things that we can never know like the temperature of the sun. The sun is at an approximate temperature but there is no possible way of knowing what that temperature is. Scientists have accumulated estimates but it is technically not a for sure, 100%, truth. However, I still believe in the philosophy for the aspects that we can prove to be true or have already proven true because I believe things have to be 100% true in order for us to say it is a truth. But, sometimes I believe that things can be partially true like peoples emotions and how they can feel two different ways about something, such as happy and sad. So, it is partially true that they feel sad but also partially true that they feel happy. Also, the fact that I believe that this philosophy is true but also a little untrue is a partial truth.

Truth can come into play with beliefs as well. People believe in a variety of things from religion to fictional creatures to even fictional existing places. Many people believe in the religion Christianity and Catholicism and are convinced that these beliefs are true. Also, people believe in many other religions like Buddhism and some people have even created religions out of their own beliefs. Religion is a hard topic in the evaluation of truth because we do not necessarily have hard evidence for it. So, from my beliefs that things can be true when they are repetitive, we cannot really prove these religion beliefs unless we can consecutively prove them. Although, people who believe in these religions could definitely argue otherwise. Since it is their belief, they can endlessly argue what is true about it and that it is true. Also, people who believe in fictional creatures and places can do the exact same thing. They could insist about their belief for an unlimited amount of time. So truth is a big debate in the belief of the existence of higher beings and other beliefs because the only way that beliefs can be backed up is with other beliefs. Beliefs and facts are not necessarily connected because of the different ways of how they can be proven and supported.

It is hard to figure out truth when things like conspiracy theories exist. There are many conspiracies from Princess Diana’s death to current popular rappers who have recently passed. People find the hidden story behind a news report heard on the television. They dig deeper to find if there was somehow a way that the event occurred on purpose. People fixate on the fact that there is substantial evidence from these events that point all signs to non coincidental. So people believe what they think is true which could be that the government is behind certain world disasters or the “Illuminati,” a group that people believe there are celebrities and notorious people involved with worshipping the devil and act on these beliefs connecting to conspiracies. People all around create these “behind the scenes” stories that they believe are true and spread the possibilities of their purposefulness, especially through social media. When these stories exist and more and people believe them, it makes it harder to know the truth. It is more interesting to believe in such a narrative than to believe a terrible event occurred. But people do get caught up in these accounts and they are stuck not necessarily knowing the truth.

Truth is a hard thing to figure out but we have known how to test the truth. People will always believe what they want and sometimes it is hard to turn their heads. But truth exists and we find it in many things, every day. We find it in conversations, research, experiments and huge scientific breakthroughs. The truth is out there no matter what people may think.
