Although movies and other popular entertainment have portrayed artificial intelligence (AI) in some form for many decades, it has become a very real thing in the past decade. More recently, there have been many concerns over whether or not AI will help American workers or further automate and subsequently take many American jobs. The simple answer to this is yes, AI automation will almost certainly automate many jobs as well as change the way many jobs are performed, harming millions of American workers.
Despite being a relatively new concern, AI automation has many experts worried.
In fact, according to AI expert and venture capitalist Kai Fu Lee, over 40% of the world's jobs will be replaced by robots that are capable of automating tasks. Some of the most affected people in Kai's opinion are drivers. People who Chauffeur, drive trucks, or just drive for a living will be affected greatly by the rise of self-driving cars in the next few decades. Some of the people who will be most affected by this are low-income workers.
Many low-income workers perform jobs that are able to be automated in a more efficient manner by the use of machines with AI. That being said, AI automation does not only affect low-income workers. Jobs such as
While still hopeful, many experts also believe that AI improvements may also change the way American workers create goods. Many cherished professions that involve intricate detail and handcraftsmanship will also disappear. This means that much of the personal touch will be taken out of things.
Everything will be produced in the exact same way and made to look, feel, and be the exact same way. This means that many artists and creative professionals will be out of jobs and not have many other places to turn, with their skills being very specific and not applicable to many other areas, especially with further AI automation.
Even with all the warnings, some say that AI improvements will benefit American workers. They claim that AI automation and improvements will actually create many jobs, which is true. However, what they don't account for is the great difference between the number of jobs that will be lost versus the number of jobs that will be added. Another problem with this argument is that jobs involving AI are usually specialized, and would certainly require some form of education at the last, and likely a degree for a certain specialization. Because of this, many of the Americans who will be left unemployed will not be able to find a new job that revolved around AI because they have no experience or know-how.
idk.
Overall, AI is something that we cannot stop. It is inevitable, and its impacts will be far-reaching. All that can be hoped for is that its impacts towards workers are minimal, but sadly this is not likely. Many American workers will most likely be left unemployed and helpless with the rise of AI. It will destroy long-standing traditions and old industries that were once cherished in communities everywhere. The question is not as much if AI will come anymore, but rather when.
