Categories: India Culture

India, home of the Himalayas and the Taj Mahal, is a constitutional republic located in the greater part of South Africa. Containing one-sixth of the world’s population (second most populous country behind China), India has 29 states each with their own control over affairs. New Delhi, the capitol of India, is located in the Delhi national territory. Under the current power of President Ram Nath Kovind, India is known for their urbanized culture. The Indus civilization is the birth place of three religions; Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Hinduism is still the most common religion with Islam, Christianity and Buddhism following close in rank. Over time the residents developed a very wealthy intellectual life growing constantly in fields like architecture, literature, music and mathematics. Growth intellectually comes with their vastly diverse culture. Primary language influences include Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and English. With the English language being a worldwide known medium, India primarily only uses the language in association with business, political and economic relations.

India and the United States share a relationship based off shared democratic values and increased interests on bilateral, regional and global issues. After the meetings between Indian Prime Minister Modi and President Obama at the first two summits, the India-US relationship was called “Enduring Global Partners in the 21st Century” under the motto “ChaleinSaathSaath: Forward Together We Go”. The growing bilateral relationship focuses on trade, investments, cyber security, new technology, environment and health. During the Prime Minister’s September 2014 visit, both US and India made it a target to grow trade in goods and services to 0 Billion.

This would help grow the economy of India by helping break down trade barriers to grow global supply chains thus creating jobs and ultimate prosperity for both economic sides. As the economy has grown over the past few years the ability to incorporate new technologies has increased as well. In 2000, both governments mutually agreed to cooperate in science, engineering and health. This allowed thousands of interactions between Indian and US scientists, but India suffers from a huge communicational deficit.

Since the public release of the World Wide Web in 1991, more than half of the total population of the world has acquired a way to connect. Being second most populous country in the world, it is shocking to find that one-third of the unconnected area is found in India. The ability to get that mass amount of people connected to the rest of the world is key to growing the economy and to reach the goals set between India and the US. As Silicon Valley rushes to tap into new markets and government investments, companies like Google and Facebook have shown interest in aiding of the connection of India. Over 400 train stations are across the country now have free WiFi services that also run a digital literacy program to teach the rural population how to use the internet. With the success of increasing digital literacy, Facebook wants to set up an Express WiFi Initiative of 20,000 hotspots that will connect users for a low cost of 10rupees ($.14 USD) a day. Considering the average yearly pay for someone in living in a metro of India is $1,670 USD, it would cost $52 USD to be connected through the Facebook hotspots.

Senior policy adviser, Amitabh Kant stated to CNN “To my mind, more than creating physical infrastructure we need digital infrastructure.” This digital infrastructure will allow the unconnected to get connected quicker. In September of 2006, India’s richest man launched a $20 billion USD mobile network. Two years after the launch of the project, Reliance Jio has built a subscriber base of more than 250 million people. At this rate “Every phone in India will be a 4G enabled phone…” and India will be “fully 4G” by 2020. This project then started a boom in the smartphone market of India. The average price of a basic smartphone in India is $60 where the most common keypad devices average $12. With the average pay below $2,000 USD it is hard to gain access to some of the leading smartphones like Apple IPhone and Samsung Galaxy. “Tomorrow morning if I could wake up and have one wish for the Indian internet, I would say it would be a much more affordable quality smartphone…If we could do that then I think literally overnight we could double the user base in India” said Manu Jain Xiaomi’s India head.

The growth in connection to the internet in India is aiding in a mass boom of the globalization of the country. Google estimates that India will hit over 800 million users by 2022. What that means for the rest of the world is that India is a huge opportunity in the tech industry. With their diverse culture and ever growing intellectual ability Indians now have a way to start connecting to the rest of the world and sharing what they know. This could mean, with the good relations between the US and India, that we now have an ever-growing technological powerhouse as an ally.
