Identity Development and Personal Experience

“I am therefore I do or I do therefore I am?” Who I am is drawn together by traits and attributes, all driving the array of choices that color my life experiences. I am creative; therefore I draw, write poetry and do photography. I am athletic; therefore I play soccer, do mixed martial arts, and choreography. I am compassionate; therefore I have participated in mission trips to Nepal, Haiti and soon, California. I am intelligent; therefore I have excelled in the International Baccalaureate program as well as taking part in the German Honor Society and student council.

Michael Angelo said, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” In the same way, I believe that we are born with traits that forever characterize who we are and everyday we are discovering them.

I learned in biology that animals and humans exhibit both learned and innate behaviors. So when, at the age of 8, I jumped out of a moving car to save a baby rabbit, being attacked by two crows, both my parents and I knew I was innately compassionate and fearless.

I never questioned that those two traits would be, as in that moment, driving forces in my life.

Although, innately compassionate, I had to learn how to direct and demonstrate it. At the age of 10, I began doing volunteer work at Town and Country Animal Hospital, under the supervision of Doctor Yvonne Provci. I've always had a desire to explore veterinary medicine, however I never realized how vast the field of veterinary medicine is.

While living in Zurich, Switzerland I met a Veterinary Neurologist, Doctor Antonio Bowens. The following summer I traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to intern at his practice. I was exposed to college level texts on parasitology, observed surgeries and learned protocol for a "good check-up.” The experience awakened my desire to become a veterinary-neurologist.

Doctor Bowens also taught me that the road to becoming a veterinary neurologist was a long one; he had been in school for nearly 16 years. And albeit I desire a similar career, I desire more that the road taken be enjoyable and just as much an accomplishment as the destination. Which is why, unlike most people, university will not be my first step toward becoming a veterinary neurologist. I've graduated high school and will attend a university, however I first plan to take a gap year. During this year I will work and travel to California to do volunteer work. I plan to intern at the Los Angeles Dream Center, a rehabilitation center for people who have struggled with drug and sex related addictions. They offer internship opportunities for individuals devoted to helping and learning; I plan to spend four months there, doing just that.

Though I've grown, from jumping out of cars to reaching those in need through volunteer work, the desire to help is unchanged. I have been fortunate enough to live a full life up to this point, expressing every aspect of me, learning my limits and expanding my paradigm. I will not claim that any experience has “made” me, I am resolved that I am therefore I do. However every experience has uncovered a part of me I was unaware existed and like Michael Angelo, I offer only my willingness to further discover what statue lies beneath the stone.
