Gun Violence Is A Threat To Society

Categories: Politics

Every time I hear about a homicide or shooting, it makes me shiver from my soul and I picture myself going through what a victim would. I feel bad about the people whose lives were affected and I always think what can be the reason that might be causing gun violence. The question that comes to my mind is, 'Are the weak gun purchasing laws the reason for drastic increase in gun violence and gun-related incidents'. The reason why I consider this question essential and important to bring up is the recent mass shooting that mainly involved teenagers.

Being a teenager myself it makes me curious to find out the reason behind the foundation which leads to incidents such as these and what factors might be affecting this issue.

The same way, gun violence also affects the increasing numbers of suicides. “Latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show there were a total of almost 33,600 deaths from guns in 2016 - of which more than 22,900 were suicides.” The following paragraph further exploits the issue and the questions rising, because of the numerous incidents relating to gun violence.

The answer might help us to make possible ratification and save numerous lives at stake. According to pew research center there are about forty-two percent of adults living in United States households who own guns, which is a huge part of US population.

Owning firearm is a major responsibility to uphold, and should not be easy enough for that many people to own.

Firearm has been proved as the major cause of death in the US and other parts of the world and there has been numerous evidences and proofs supporting that. One of the reasons that many people in the US have firearms is because the gun laws are protected by the 2nd Amendment, which gives US citizens the right to bear arms(2nd Amendment). So in case the US Government collapses, US citizens should have arms to protect themselves from the government or any foreign intrusion. The 2nd Amendment is not the cause for gun violence, it just gives the citizens right to bear arms but the restrictions of the gun laws by the government decides who can own a gun. Hypothetically if the government makes a minor mistake in making gun laws, which it has, it can lead to catastrophic events.

The stricter the gun laws are the harder it gets for the people who have bad intentions or want to misuse the right to bear arms. By stricter gun laws I mean that if a person wants to buy or own a gun he/she should undergo a strenuous procedure that would involve background checks, medical and mental checkups and other important safety measures that would ensure the safety of the person withholding the gun and others around him. If weaker gun purchasing laws has an indirect relationship to the increase in gun violence, States with weak gun purchasing laws will have more gun related crimes then the states with stronger gun purchasing laws. In this document I want to provide enough evidence and proofs to support my hypothesis right, in other words if a state with a strict gun purchasing law has less gun violence as compared to a state with weaker gun laws that has more gun violence.

I would be able to prove that my theory( weaker gun laws increasing gun violence) is right. To prove my hypothesis right, I will compare two states which are Connecticut and Mississippi. I chose Mississippi because it’s ranked as 50th for gun law rank and I chose Connecticut because it is one of the states with strong gun laws. Connecticut has 58 for Brady campaign score. My first step would be to make a survey with the following questions; Do you own any other firearms? If you do, what is your reason for buying or owning firearms?Q2. How would you vote your state gun laws between 1 to 5, 5 being the highest?. Have you or anyone you know encountered gun violence? Q4. How do you personally feel about gun laws in your state? What amends would you make to improve gum violence?I will ask these questions to random people in both the state.

These questions will help me determine how do people feel about their state on bases of gun laws. My second step would be getting the same statistics from some research conducted online, for example I will get statistics about the gun violence from both the states. The gun violence I am going to compare are homicide, suicide and mass shootings in recent years example in between 2000 and 2018. To support my argument, I will take polls and collect data from online and live sources which will be regarding gun-related deaths. The three main death reasons as stated above are homicide, suicide and mass shootings, and how they all connect to the lack of strict gun laws in different states. Same five questions will be asked and more data will strengthen the argument, thus might providing evidence to take a evident step towards prevention of the lacking.

Economy can also be a factor in relation to gun violence. In consideration of the two states, Connecticut and Mississippi, making a judgment on gun violence can be biased. As not all the states are economically stable, and one state is in terms of economy, doing much better than the other. The relation in the economy and gun violence is, as people with less jobs and less money to spend, and naturally lower standard of living try to find easier solutions, no matter how risky that might be. And that number one risk is turning towards crimes and violence which leads to the increasing amounts of firearms handled. Economy might not be a major factor, but there is no doubt that it does affect and contribute to the increase in gun violence. Economy can also be affected as putting a price on the devastating incidents that occur because of gun violence and the lack of gun laws which can ultimately prevent such consequences.

As stated in my above paragraphs gun laws are what should be blamed and should be given more strenuous attention to help reduce the price tag that goes on the medical bills, investigation bills, legal fees and prison costs which could be direct or indirect but results in a wastage of our citizens tax money. The other factor that might affect gun violence is population. If I compare populations of the 2 states I chose i.e Mississippi and Connecticut and if it turns out the state with higher population has more gun violence. That will show a direct correlation between population and gun violence, as my hypothesis; more population attracts more problems. To ensure that weaker gun laws are the most important reason to gun violence, I will test my hypothesis with some more states, so I might get less margin of error.

To further exploit the relation between population and gun violence, It leads back to economy and adjoins a similar idea. As population of a state which in this example, Mississippi, increases exponentially over the years, directly relates to increase in problems. More people are now competing for necessities of a common man and thus results in similar situations stated above for economic factor. To Conclude my essay, I think possessing a gun does not cause harm, but its the lack of responsibility of an individual which results in problems.

The Second Amendment allows Americans the right to hold firearms and protect themselves and their families, even though there is no way to eradicate the Second amendment, but there should be preventive measures and stricter ordinance which ensures misuse of a US citizens right. The lack of strict gun purchasing laws and incapacitated measure taken to prevent incidents regarding gun violence might be a leading reason resulting in increase of gun violence. If my stated theory is true, individual states or states with weaker gun laws might want to improve their gun laws, so people irresponsible or with bad intentions do not get hold of a weapon. Gun related deaths are the leading cause of deaths in the US, and taking preventive measures and taking steps can ensure numerous amount of lives and make people in the US feel safe again.
