War can be considered as an honor fighting for their country in one’s perspective but can be seen as a nightmare to others. The poems demonstrate different viewpoints about war. The first poem ‘Who’s for the Game?’ written by Jessie Pope, encourages young men to join the army to fight in the war. While in the second poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ written by Wilfred Owen, the message being conveyed is that war is dangerous and people shouldn’t get involved in it. Both of the poets have strong viewpoints about war, but very different opinions about the effect that it has on the person. Each poet develops opposing viewpoints about war to persuade the readers.

D-Day would be one of the most important victories for the Allied forces. What…...

Stephen King is an author who has inspired and influenced my writing for many years. My personal taste revolves around classic science fiction and fantasy such as War of the Worlds, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Princess Bride, and horror has never been a genre which I appreciate. However Stephen King captured my attention when I was young and stood out against other authors with his spectacular use of vocabulary, intricate characters, and lengthy novels which seemed to hold…...

Biography of Patrick Pearse When thinking about Pátraig (Patrick) Pearse, the majority of people associate him with being an Irish martyr of the Rising of 1916. However, that is only a snip bit of the story, and is no way the story in its entirety. Patrick Pearse was born to an Irish mother from Dublin, and an English father from Birmingham, which, given his position in the 1916 Rising, would have seemed to be very contradicting. Unlike many of his…...

The Air Force's mission is to fly, fight, and win; in other words, to kill people and blow up things. This only happens with an arsenal of advanced aircraft that can deliver bombs on target and haul warfighters to the frontline. Many Air Force specialties have the responsibility of maintaining Air Force aircraft. Crew chiefs inspect the aircraft, the communication,…...

I’m going to tell you a little story about how good friends will always end up talking to each other every now and then, and often make a good team. So here goes: One day, our car pulled up to my ski class. This was my third day. Luisa Valenzuela’s short story, I’m Your Horse in the Night, shows the effect of the repressive tactics used to silence politicized populations during Argentina’s Dirty War. The goal of these tactics was not only to kill or remove those who posed a direct threat to the regime, but also to convey a message of power and authority to anyone who could be considered a threat, even an ideological one. The rhetorical climate created by the government also served to legitimize…...

I am Ulysses S. Grant, and I am going to tell you we won the Civil War. It was like a game we had to come up with a plan of how to destroy the Confederacy for wanting to allow slavery in their states, and that is what divided our nation. In the first poem ‘Who’s for the Game?’ it is trying to pursue the readers about going to war. War can be considered as an honor rather than a nightmare according to the poem. The poet uses an inspirational and motivating tone to persuade the readers about going to war. For example, the poem ‘Who’s for the Game?’ states that ‘Your country is up to her neck in a fight, And she’s looking and calling for you.’ This shows that when your country is in danger you should willing to fight for it. The poem wants the readers to believe that fighting in a war is an honor rather than a tragedy. Another way the poet shows his perspective is by asking various question about battling in the war. According to ‘Who’s for the Game?’ Jessie Pope asked ‘Who’ll grip and tackle the job unafraid?…Who’ll toe the line for the signal to ‘Go!’? Who’ll give his country a hand?’ This quote shows that joining the battle should be out of respect and an obligation for your nation. In the end, the poem ‘Who’s for the Game?’ tries to influence young men to join the war as a duty for their county.
The Message of the Poem “Dulce et Decorum Est”
In comparison, the poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ is opposing the view of about going to war. The poem establishes that war isn’t only dangerous, but fatal. The poet expresses that war has a number of side effects. For instance, ‘But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;…If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood / Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, / Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud / Of vile, incurable sore…’ This quote shows that going to war can have many painful and permanent outcomes. The poet uses negative phrases and imagery to describe the setting of war. The poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ states in the text that ‘Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod…’ This quote shows that war isn’t only terrifying, but violent. The poem helps readers understand that going to war can have negative effects on the soldiers. Through the tone and mood of the poem readers can realize how going to war can be life changing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, both of the poems have different perspectives and tones about the topic of war. The first poem ‘Who’s for the Game?’ expresses that war is a heroic act and it influences young men to join the army to fight for their country when it’s in danger. While in the second poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ conveys that war is harsh and gruesome; that can leave soldiers terrified about the events on the battlefield. Each of the poems tries to persuade the reader to agree with their point of view about war. Despite that the poems have different perspectives, they both show that war can have a different meaning behind it.
