The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the isthmus of Panama. The 80-kilometer-long canal was constructed in the early 20th century and revolutionized global trade by dramatically reducing the time and cost it took for ships to sail between the east and west coasts of the Americas. The canal features a series of locks that lift vessels up from sea level to the level of a man-made lake at the canal’s midpoint, and then lower them back down to sea level on the other side. Today, the Panama Canal remains a vital artery for international shipping, serving around 14,000 vessels annually.
