Victims of Hazing
The most common victims of hazing of being a student which mostly occurs in college and high school. The main reason of hazing occurs by sororities in college, this is because some students are so desperate to join or become accepted they will do anything in order to be a part of a particular group. Which means that the majority of a group will take advantage of this and make them suffer by doing horrible things in order to create enjoyment or entertainment out of the situation. An example of hazing is when the freshmen of a sports team ‘were told to arrive at the party with their pubic hair shaves, wearing thong underwear. They were directed to pass a chunk of chewed bread from mouth to mouth and perform push-ups naked while dipping their penises in glasses of beer. Depending on the number of push-ups, each athlete had to then drink from either his own glass or that another initiate.’ From this example you can see why this would have been banned from 42 states. Which is because over 40 people died between 2007-2017.
The issue with hazing is that the students may not realize its hazing due to it being a voluntarily activity. This is because nobody had been forced into it due to them doing it by choice so they may not register it.
Types of Hazing
There are different types of hazing such as:
Subtle Hazing- Which includes a particular act which has been accepted as “inoffensive” or pointless. Subtle hazing commonly involves hard activities that’ll include the new freshmen on a team. Which are the people that normally receive the embarrassment, that the other people make them do. The new freshmen will mostly feel pressured into participating in subtle hazing in order to feel like part of the organization an example of this is name calling.
Harassment Hazing- This is when a behaviour or action causes an emotional or physical displeasure in order to become part of a group. This can create stress and pressure for the new freshers such as verbal or sexual abuse.
Violent- These Behaviours can create an emotional psychological or most commonly a physical harm towards the newest members. Such as them forcing them to take alcohol or drugs.
However, you can prevent hazing by reporting to someone such as the police, campus police and public safety. Also, you can organise counselling sessions or talking to family or staff about this issue. Another way of decreasing hazing is by creating awareness to this issue such as giving out leaflet or talking about it in class with other students. This will allow the people that are causing hazing to occur hopefully stop their actions.
