Deadpool is an American superhero movie based on the Marvel character Deadpool, a special forces agent turned into a mercenary. The movie itself provides a genuine twist and is the first to come from the series. The twist exists as full figure naked on display to young children who are hungry for the next Marvel installment. Therefore, this marvelous production has truly been made for the older ages. Deadpool is directed by Tim Milller, who has directed possibly my favorite production.

The themes for Deadpool are comedy and revenge, which can be looked to suit the target audience of this movie as it targets the ages 15-25. This can be viewed as a generalization to appreciate these themes. Unfortunately, Deadpool has a predictable plot to say the least, with an obvious ending showing Wade defeat the antagonist as revenge and getting the girl. The formal elements are used in so much detail with a good compatibility to make one the most unique Marvel films existing.

Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, is the hero within the plot; who does not fight crime in a coordinated fashion but in a an extremely nonchalant manner. Wade is quite a comedic character in the movie as he attempts to make witty yet inappropriate remarks about ongoing real-world events; doing this whilst Deadpool and whilst not Deadpool. For example, he makes remarks against Green Lantern, a character played by the same actor but belongs to a rival company; not gaining nearly as much success as the marvel addition managed to pull off.

Cinematography is the process of capturing real time moving images on film, truly the most complex formal element next to mise-en-scene. An example of the use of cinematography in Deadpool is the opening shot which is called a long take shot, involving a large variety of angles. The whole scene shows off different comical props and covers different facial expressions.

The opening credits start straight away to show the distribution company– twentieth Century Fox, this is followed up by the appearance of the production company that excites every person on the planet as everyone must be a fan of marvel. Likewise, Deadpool begins the scene joined by “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton and opens up with a slow-motion zoom-out shot of a man who has quite recently been shot in the head, recommending that this expansion by wonder isn’t made to be as genuine as the others. The next frame includes a coffee cup that belongs to a “Rob L.”, which is spilling to show that it is morning time.

Comedy is a crucial theme in the film and it is made apparent when the frame of a magazine owned by ‘People’ shows the actor on the front cover, “SEXIEST MAN ALIVE!”. Also, the opening credits do not display the actual names of the actors or any real contributions to Deadpool but just funny remarks made by the character, such as “A MOODY TEEN” and “A CGI CHARACTER”. The director is also shown to be a comedic character himself as he is humorously labelled as “AN OVERPAID TOOL”.

Overall, the opening credits reveal that this movie is completely not serious, almost like a parody of some kind. From the unfitting music to the character of Wade Wilson thrusting his clothed groin up against another dead man’s face. Therefore, the cinematography job as a whole is splendidly done, involving diverse camera angles going around and exploring the still frame. Deadpool may have a lot of going on in the scene but the camera revolves quite slowly so that the audience is able to capture every little wild thing going on. The fact that a close-up is the most used camera angle in this scene, it ensures that the audience know everything in the scene. It is supposed to break the rules of the norm to come across as more interesting for their primary target audience which is ages from 15-25 males as they stereotypically have a smaller attention span, so more excitement means more attraction.

One thing the Director of Photography definitely focused on was the depth of field. A small depth of field or a shallow focus would have been used so that the camera only focuses one aspect at a time, as if the entire shot in focus so it would distract the audience from the more important parts of the shot. The lens used in this shot represent to Zoom Lens as none of the characters are actually moving, the image is just being magnified.

Furthermore, the next scene shows Deadpool to rather have a childish mentality. This is because he is seen playing with the car window, cannot seem to get rid of a chewing gum and puts it on the camera and in the way of the audience. The frame does involve again a variety of camera angles, mostly when the character is trying to get from the backseat to the front passenger seat. For example, a close up to his struggling feet trying to get out of the window barrier and another close up but this time a zoom in shot to his groin.


The French word mise-en-scene means staging or putting on action. It very well may be suitable to call it staging. The definition looks basic yet it can easily climb the gates of complexity and confuse the average person. Deadpool is an unexpected case in comparison to most films, it originates from a comic book. Dark colored makeup could exist because teenagers are often rebellious. Also, her costume is black and yellow, comparable to a danger sign, which could mean that she is a teenager so she is experimental.


Sound refers to all that we hear in a film – words said by the characters, sound effects and the music. The music does a job of making the climax more intense and enjoyable to watch as. It makes the entrance look fantastic and tells the audience that revenge is coming. The main fight scene between Deadpool and Ajax is set like most superhero films are … with the girl trapped behind the antagonist, lying in distress gazing specifically into the hero’s bold eyes. In addition, Ajax’s costume is of a dim shading, which makes him the antagonist. When he approaches Deadpool, the music escalates significantly all the more demonstrating that the he won’t be knocked off quite so easily. The camera angles work in normal zoom to display a real time image to the audience, to feel like they are actually present. Every movement done by the protagonist and antagonist is followed by the camera. For example, the camera follows the sword thrown by Deadpool on glass of the machine to save Vanessa (the girl). In addition, three situations present themselves at the same time: Deadpool fighting Ajax to save Vanessa; Colossus fighting Angel Dust and Vanessa trying to save herself. Surprisingly, the camera is able to capture all of the situations and different music exists each one.

The whole plain of field of is used in this fight scene, therefore, the staging is full of detail. The writers portray Ajax beating Deadpool and stick a knife to in his head in hope that the audience thinks that revenge will not be carried out. Nonetheless, the camera quickly changes towards Vanessa as she escapes and then starts changing between the fight and her to create suspense. Suddenly, the antagonist is stabbed heroically by the girl resulting in the music to come to an end and the camera shifts focus to Deadpool. New romantic music plays as the angle changes to Point of View through the eyes of the protagonist. Animated characters begin to appear, indicating that something went wrong with Deadpool’s brain when he got stabbed in the side of the head, enforcing the theme of comedy. Unsurprisingly, a similar situation presents itself in the other fight, where Negasonic repeats the actions of Vanessa.

It’s pitch black and a gradual sound of rocks crackling occur as Vanessa is being unburied from a long fall from the fight scene. This was a good decision from the Director of Photography as it leaves the audience waiting to know what happened. The ending of the scene shows the merciless Deadpool beating down an almost innocent looking Ajax as Colossus pleads him to stop. The theme of revenge is reinforced when the antagonist is still shot in the head after disregarding a heartwarming speech made by colossus about forgiveness.

Southeast Asia has a plethora of history in film, Bollywood being the most popular film industry. The film industry in India has found major success in its years of functioning. As a consequence, both Hollywood and Bollywood are guilty of using each other’s ideas. Thus, Deadpool is not innocent in this field, as the character is seen to copy an important style. Performers in Southeast Asia often talk to the audience through the camera as if the character was actually in front of them. Deadpool is seen conversating with the camera from when he takes chewing gum off the camera to the after credits scene. In the after credits scene, he wears a robe over his costume and even an undershirt. This tells the audience that Wade is so comfortable in his costume, that he sometimes accepts as his own skin! He walks to the camera and teaches the audience a maturity lesson that the popular Marvel after credit scenes are for children and that Deadpool does not have one as it is not meant for children.

In conclusion, the formal elements utilized in this analysis of the film production – Deadpool, are Cinematography, Mise-en-scene and Sound. Cinematography is the most crucial formal element as the whole film is filled with a variety of camera angles; depth of field and interaction with the main character. The film has been surely influenced by the Southeast Asian theatre as Deadpool is seen numerous times attempting to conversate with the audience by utilizing comedic remarks.
