Diversity is essential in organizations, like the Army because it allows for different viewpoints, languages, cultural acceptance, and physical abilities. These are some of the many topics that we come in contact with in our daily lives. If one person always believed his way or opinion was the correct one, things would only operate their way. We would not have an acceptance for other views or culture. History has proven how important diversity is by learning to accept the differences we see in others.
If we continue to be sensitive to others, we will build stronger teams in the process. By diversifying, it allows organizations to gather opinions from others, accept different ideas and work toward the best possible outcome for a given situation.
In the Army, there are many different ethnicities. This aids in allowing for different viewpoints in the companies. A Hispanic man may look at the obstacle at hand differently than a Caucasian. Different views allow people to communicate and figure out what is the best way to tackle the situation or problem at hand.
If all of the groups were made up of the same race, there would not be very many differing opinions. When we begin to accept what others think or believe we see a cohesion among team members. They begin to speak up and give their honest opinions instead of hiding in the back afraid to say what they feel is right. We can empower our soldiers by giving their viewpoints validity.
As we differing viewpoints, diversity brings with it many different languages.
Having different ways to communicate with other people or ourselves is very important in the Army since soldiers deploy to many different countries. Having soldiers who can communicate effectively and in the native language helps them a lot when attempting to carry out orders. "The more complex a group of people's reality/culture is, the more complex the language will be." (Manuelita Guido, 2016). If we can achieve a truly diversified Army, we will have the upper hand when interacting with other countries.
Diversity also brings with it a growing acceptance of cultures instead of just tolerating others. "Cultural diversity means merging different cultures; (Asim Shah, 2017). The Army puts an emphasis on diversity because of the need to accept minorities and women. Soldiers face many long deployments where they are away from their families, accepting and learning about other soldiers traditions and culture is a way to keep morale up. It also fosters a sense of community when you share with others the things that are important to you. Learning about what your soldier values are one of the most important ways to lower turnover rates. If they feel they are valued, they will be more likely to re-enlist. When organizations diversify, they are showing that they value other opinions and accept those doing the hard work and showing up daily to make a difference.
Lastly, the physical abilities of a diverse organization are much stronger. Since the organization cannot have everyone doing the same job, diversity is needed. Some people may be great with numbers, and others are born leaders. "We need experience, critical thinking, and creativity in our force, but most importantly we need teams of people who think differently from one another and yet are joined together in common cause." (Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, 2016). As with the different viewpoints, there are men and women who would instead use their strength or hands to work. Some would rather sit behind a desk and use their brain. No matter what you prefer, diversity in the workplace makes it possible while also building the most active team.
When an organization dives in and learns about their employees, their viewpoints, traditions, and their physical abilities, they have a better idea of who they are and how they can be empowered in the workplace. "For the Army of tomorrow to be as strong as the army of today, we must harness the power of diverse teams and draw further from one of America's greatest advantages our diverse population." (Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, 2016). Many of the soldiers that fight for the United States of America are from countries that we may need to work alongside one day. If we continue to recruit minorities and women, how much more effective could we be at working with those countries? If we want to continue to be the best we need to empower those, minorities and women, which will keep pushing us toward new and better advantages in the field.
