Imagine a world in which social media reigns supreme over nearly ten billion technology addicts. Distracted driving soars at an all-time high, mature adults and youth alike record violence rather than intervene, and parents deplete college funds to satisfy their child's growing demands for new tablets and smartphones. All the while, hunger and poverty continue to strike people around the globe.
This heart-wrenching scenario has more grounds in reality than a true figment of your imagination, though. It is becoming our reality. Although there is a plausible argument for the case that technology enhances society, the downfalls of technology surely outweigh its benefits. Technology negatively affects our society by replacing human interactions with mechanical messages and by spurring an endless need for luxury products. In turn, this lulls people into a state of perennial desire and materialism, not to mention indifference to the less fortunate population of the world. In this way, modern technology continues to disintegrate vital aspects of society.
Despite the fact that technology absolves many basic human values, many opponents suggest that the use of technology is purely beneficial, serving as means for both educational and recreational purposes. Certainly, one advantage of technology is its ability to connect and unite people and cultures all over the world. This marvelous feat eliminates divisive tension amongst different subgroups of the population. Not only can people enjoy themselves holding online conversations, but they can also gain more knowledge in the process. Furthermore, supporters of technology argue that staying "linked in" allows people to stay informed on breaking news and other important global events and trends. The Internet also serves as an open forum for individuals to use their right to free speech. Conclusively, although technology causes moral and social problems today, it is not without its benefits.
Nonetheless, technology often hinders people's innate ability to appreciate their good fortune and strive to help the underprivileged. Consider Black Friday for example. Greedy consumers line the streets outside of big-name retail stores to score the best deals on new, often unnecessary, gadgets. All the while, they neglect to pay their bills, in favor of splurging to satisfy their own desires. Ironically, this day of ludicrous spending follows Thanksgiving. A holiday once spent expressing gratitude, Thanksgiving is now increasingly spent impatiently yearning for devices yet to be bought. In this way, technology is much of the reason that greed dominates our society today, as charitable “good Samaritan" acts are forgotten to make room for spending.
