An Analysis of Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Chris Crowe

A 14 year old negro boy from Chicago was brutally murdered due to racismi Emmett Louis Till came down to the south from Chicago, and was brutally murdered for whistling at a white woman at the store. Mississippi Trial, 1955 by Chris Crowe talk about a fictional character named Hiram Hillburn and his experience with Emmetts death and trial. Over the course of the novel Hiram changed. At first he was innocent, then he was confused. Finally he becomes more knowledgeable about racism.

In the beginning of the novel, Hiram is an innocent character. When RC and Hiram are watching neighbors Ralph and Ronnie dance out of their house, R.C was about to throw a rock and Hiram says, “ We’re gonna be in big trouble if you do “. This shows his innocence because he felt bad and didn’t want to get in trouble. Another example of his innocence is he was hungry and ate a cookie when he wasn’t supposed to.

Next, while Hiram is trying to fall asleep, but keeps thinking about what RC did to Emmett, he thinks “My head was so jammed with troubles that I could hardly keep it still on my pillow; plenty of my restlessness was because of what RC had done". This shows he’s conflicted because he‘s trying to decide if he’s racist or not. Towards the end of the novel, Hiram starts to realize all the racist things that go on in Mississippii When Hiram‘s back in Arizona talking to his dad, he says ,“’Yeah, but it took me a while to notice that. I guess when I was a little kid that was all going over my head".

This quote shows that Hiram changed because he’s starting to see things from his dads point of view. Another example is when Hiram and his dad were on their drive from the station going home, Hiram says, “I thought I’d never want to leave; then stuff started to happen, ugly kinds of stuf”.This quote shows how Hiram notices the racism things that go on in Mississippi aren‘t right. In the beginning of the novel Hiram was innocent , towards the middle he started to be confused. Then he became more knowledgeable about the racist events that took place in Mississippi. Throughout the novel Hiram has became a different person. Even though Emmett was brutally murdered, he changed our world.
