The purpose of the experiment was to understand the safety of the street and honesty of people in the selected community. To make the valid assumption, a social experiment was designed. The experiment was set up in the downtown main streets, with plenty of people and shops. I chose to walk by three stores with my friend being in the car in front of them, watching individuals who see the wallet dropped. When I saw a company of people walking few steps from me, I accidentally pushed my wallet to the ground, expecting their reaction of giving it back to me.
The wallet was empty only with a small paper to call me if one finds it. The outcome of the experiment was quite interesting.
Only half of the times people would pick up the wallet and give it back to me, while in the other cases no one would notice it laying on the floor, or me dropping it. There was no one from people on the street who would see the wallet and take it in their bag.
The result of the experiment proved that group conformity determines people's reaction towards the actions. Only people walking in groups would give the wallet back, while those walking on their own would not take any action, even if they supposedly saw me dropping the wallet. It is possible to deduce that the social identity of the groups that came across the street was based on the moral principles and good judgment.
Also, one of the explanations would refer to the making of a good deed before other members of the group to confirm own group inclusiveness.
