Newspaper, radio, TV news, and magazines are some sources to inform people about events that are happening around the world, which include political, sports, business, arts, entertainment, and etc. News is always investigated and confirmed by journalist, whose job is to pursuit the truth. On the other hand, social media like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, LinkedIn, so forth, is what people use today as informatics source and not only as “social connection.” Moreover, social media has become more and more popular around the world to share and search for information.
Nevertheless, some question comes to mind: Who verifies the information in social media? How can we know that what we are reading on social media is real or fake? Who guarantees us credibility? The article, “Fake News: Personal Responsibility must Trump Intellectual Laziness” published in 2017 by Matt Chain on Seattle, is talked about the responsibility of people to verify the sources of the information they read on social media to make sure they do not consume or share fake news.
Chain refers Asian Americans in Seattle as his target audience, who tend to use their social media as a source of information or news. In his article, the author uses comparison and cause and effect to make his argument persuasive. In addition, he uses effective evidence, such as credibility facts, to convince his target audience.
At the beginning of his article, author describes how fake news is made compared to real news to persuade his claim. In the second paragraph, Chain explains there are people who elaborate algorithms based on the interest of people.
According to Chain, “It makes it seem like most people agree with you because you’re only fed information and stories that validate your worldview (para. 2).” In this example, author shows readers that social media is a source of what they feel connected with and what are they interest it. Nevertheless, author states, “Its fact-based information presented by people who have checked, researched, and documented what they are presenting as the truth (para. 3).” In this part, he said how real facts and information are made and certified by experts on the subject and not based on people’s opinions. Furthermore, author says, “It required broadcasters to present these issues and provide contrasting views, the very definition of fair and balanced reporting (para. 6).” The work that involves in investigating and validating news is a hard responsibility, which is part of being a journalist. Chain gives powerfully evidence to explain the audience the hard work behind real news, which it is completely the opposite of fake news. In addition, audience will have a better understanding of the quality of news that they read in social media. That is why in the last paragraph author adds, “There is a strong fact-based journalism community in Seattle, news sources that cover Seattle’s issues, with diverse voices like the International Examiner, Crosscut, Seattle Globalist, and the South Seattle Emerald, which are all excellent examples of community-based journalism (para. 8).” Chain gives the audience real sources that they can use to look for real news or information, which is written and proved by real expert. As result, readers can stop looking social media as valid source. By describing how fake news is created compared to real news, the audience can realize and be more aware the next time they read an article or news in their social networks. Now they know the difference between fake and real, and the most important they know real sources.
The use of cause and effect helps the author to explain the consequences of consuming fake news. In paragraph 4, Chain says, “When you factor in the algorithms that feed you what you like, you can clearly see the more fake news you consume on social media, the more is pushed your way (para. 4).” In this example, author talks about the purpose of the algorithms; it is catching readers by showing them fake news with the determination of earning money. As result, readers not only consume fake news, they are sharing it creating a net of fake news. In addition, Chain mentions in paragraph 5, “People seeking fact-based journalism lose, because the more extreme the media becomes to entice consumers with provocative headlines and click-bait to earn more money, the less their news is fact-based and becomes more opinion driven (para 5).” In this part, author describes how readers are attracted to provocative and attractive subjects when they are looking for information. However this information is based on opinions and not actual facts. Moreover, this is the cause of losing credibility in experts like journalist, who work is finding the truth because readers cannot stop clicking. As the author mentioned before the purpose of news in social media is to earn money and not to inform. For example, in paragraph 4, author says, “These clicks in turn generated money for the people promoting the stories (para. 4).” By using cause and effect, author shows his readers how they are consuming fake news without knowing. Author persuade his audience because readers will think twice before clicking on an attractive or interesting title or headlines the next time they are on social media. Chain supports his evidence by showing the readers the consequence of reading or watching fake news in social media.
Math Chaim wrote an effective article by using comparison and cause and effect to organize the structure of his article. Chain uses a lot of credibility facts to persuasive his target audience. At the beginning, author starts by stating his target audience. In the second paragraph, Chain mentions the importance for Asian Americans in Seattle to use social networks to connect socially and politically; on the other hand, there is “downside.” In the same paragraph, author describes how fakes news are made by the creation of algorithms, which calculate the information of people’s interest. In other words, fake news is information created by the opinions of people not experts. Then, author compares fake news with real news whose information is investigated and proved by expect in the subject. Author uses these facts to show the audience the difference in research quality between fake news and real news. Another example of structural organization is cause and effect. This type of organization makes his argument effective because author explains the consequences of consuming fake news. In paragraph 4, author explains how readers are part of a net of fake news in their social media without knowing. Furthermore, all information that readers see and read in social media is not real; it is part of an algorithm based on their interest. In paragraph 5, author talks about how readers are attracted to fancy headlines which drive them to fake news. Nevertheless, real news is losing credibility because readers still consuming without verifying of what they are reading is real or fake. By using cause and effect as part of his organization author support his facts by showing audience that social media is not a reliable resource for searching information. It is the opposite. In the last two paragraphs, author claims his argument by telling audience that it is their responsibility to verify the sources of what they read on social media and make sure it is real news. In addition, Chain gives and shares a lot of real sources that there are in Seattle, “a strong fact-based journalism community.” This shows readers the strong and trustworthy sources that they can use to look for real news in their city. This is a good example of persuasive article. The way author organizes his article is efficient and understood; Chain persuasive the target audience with his argument.
In Chain’s article, he states that is readers’ responsibility to verify the information that they click on social media. In order to convince his audience, Chain supports efficiently his argument by using comparison and cause and effect as part of his structure. Doing that, he describes how fake news is made compared to real news. Also, Chain explains how fakes news is affecting them. Reading his article, his target audience will find it persuasive because he uses effective evidence, credibility facts, to convince them. He encourages audience to question everything they read any information in social media.
