"If I were dropped out of a plane into the ocean and told the nearest land was a thousand miles away, I'd still swim. And I'd despise the one who gave up." -Abraham Maslow. Even the darkest shadows vanish under beams of light. Light makes way for cultivation where the plants are lush. Darkness cast on our everyday lives can be illuminated with our own luminance of hope and passion, and thus, the deepest darkness that we face can be conquered by our own efforts. From material to psychological resources, William lacked many necessities, another obstacle that he faced. There was a widespread scarcity of material; food, batteries, and tools were always short in supply, and toys had to be homemade. This was another major obstacle: he was told that his dreams were hopeless, but he never surrendered, even when lacking emotional support. When taunted by others, "That's right,' I said. "I'm lazy, misla, but I know what I'm doing and soon all of you will see!" (198) Then, William accomplished feats that were almost impossible in his impoverished in his village. Strong with his tenacity, William managed to deflect hardships with determination and improvision.
