Growing up in an inner-city with a single parent and a sister that is ten years older than me was my family. There was never a strong father figure in my life since the day my dad left when I was just five years old. He just packed his bags and left, as simple as that, I never saw him ever again. Although I would question my mother for answers she never knew how to answer me. My mother worked two jobs for my sister and me, she worked hard to give me and my sister everything she could.

We slept all together in a single room because my mother could not afford to pay for an apartment. Once I turned ten years old is when I got used to the fact that my father was not going to be around anymore. This was a huge impact on my life because education has always been my motivation to enhance a successful life.

I believe it is important to learn how to meet challenges and overcome obstacles. However, I knew at an early age that I wanted to be successful because I have seen my mother struggle to give me everything she could. For as long as I remember, I have worried about whether or not her income was going to stretch too far for one month. Seeing my mother struggle has motivated me to set goals for my future. I am the first person to attend college in general. The reason for that is because I know how hard it was for my mother in 1992 when she migrated to California.

Keeping up with school has taught me that it can lead to the right path and give me a chance at a wonderful life. The book “ Reading the world” and the story “ Learning to read” stated “ When I was sent of errands, I always took my book with me, and by doing one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return”. This shows that education is vital to life, therefore, working hard to provide the best instruction possible will help train me to become a future leader and will lead to a better life.

Truthfully, math was the beginning of the end for me. Being able to solve a math problem lead me to frustration and embarrassment. “ I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing”. (Frederick Douglass) This likely reflected my circumstances, my math course cumulated in the worst semester of my life. Working harder than usual by staying before and after school tutoring made it all worth it because I ended up passing the course with an average B which was enough for me. Through these experiences, I came to understand that there were many flaws in our system of education. Struggling with a simple topic made me realize that at the end of the day, no matter how difficult the situation is you will always be able to overcome it.
