Two Types of Cars

What is the Solution to the Two Types of Cars?

A few of my solutions that I think are feasible are

  • 1. Make a law that only self-sacrificing cars should be manufactured.
  • 2. If you buy a passenger preserving car and have an accident you are held accountable for their deaths and can be sued.
  • 3. Make passenger preserving cars more expensive.
  • 4. Make the statistical outcome of self-sacrifice equivalent to that of existing data for cars.

Advantages and disadvantages of each:

1. Pros- Everyone has the same type of car so there is no inequality.

Cons- There could be a lot of retaliation with people refusing to buy self-driving cars because of the self-sacrificing aspect. They may choose to only buy driver-controlled cars, even though autonomous cars have proven to be safer.

2. Pros- It is fair to everyone and the risks were known at the time of purchase of the car.

Cons- The number of lawsuits would drastically increase.

3. Pros- This makes people less likely to buy passenger-preserving cars so only a few people would have it.

Cons- It is unfair to discriminate based on earnings. It is like in the Titanic, if you are rich you get priority on the life boats and if you are poor you just have to stay on board until the ship sinks. Which is totally unfair as everyone has a right to live no matter how rich or poor.

4. Pros - It may be more acceptable to both the passengers and pedestrians.

Cons - The outcome may not be acceptable to the passenger or pedestrians who could have had maximum preservation.

Conclusion

The scientists that developed the Moral Machine said 'Never in the history of humanity have we allowed a machine to autonomously decide who should live and who should die, in a fraction of a second, without real-time supervision. We are going to cross that bridge any time now'.

The scientists also said 'Before we allow our cars to make ethical decisions, we need to have a global conversation to express our preferences to the companies that will design moral algorithms, and to the policy makers that will regulate them'.

Overall driverless cars will be very useful and much more efficient, making our everyday lives easier and more stress-free. They are much safer than the current cars as over 90 percent of accidents were caused by human error. For example, humans drink alcohol and drive, they text while driving but driverless cars will eliminate these issues.

This makes driverless cars already much safer. Driverless cars have to be programmed to be able to make vital decisions such as which life to save in a situation. This choice has to be made in less than a split second, as the control of the car is no longer in human hands.

It is important to note that these decisions will need to be made in the very near future. Self-driving cars will no longer be prototypes but will soon be products. Experts also say that while it is not clear how these decisions will be programmed into vehicles in the future, there is a clear need for public consultation, debate and legislation.
