The Things Ive Learned in School While Growing Up in Poverty

Categories: Growing Up In Poverty

When I was in school I learned many things, but studying was not easy at that time because all I wanted to do was just hang out with my friends and I did not pay attention in school. During all those years in school I learned many things and finally graduated. I felt bad emotionally because my parents sent me to a private school where most of the parents of the children were from another class and I came from a poor family.

For example, one of the things why I always judged by my parents was that we were poor, I could not understand why I could not have the same things that my classmates and friends had. My parents always worked hard to send me to the best school and taught me to be grateful for the things that I had.

I always remember that my parents paid a private school because they wanted me to have the education that they did not have.

However, when we were kids we do not paid attention what our parents are doing for us. The school where my parents used to send us was a private school, where you have to pay a lot money every month to attend. I remember it was big with a big yard in the middle, the floor was in tile with yellow and green colors, every morning they used to make us line up in the schoolyard to sing the national anthem and say a prayer because the school was Catholic.

Many great memories came to my mind when I remember those days but I also have not great memories. Now that I have grown up I think those moments were not a big deal, but back then I felt bad because my classmates were always laughing about my shoes or clothes because I did not have the outfit that was in fashion at the time. Another bad moment that I remember was that I did not have the opportunity to go to the final school trip. It was very frustrating but at the moment my parent were not able to pay for the trip.

Growing up in a poverty was very hard and difficult to deal with because I saw the differences in the social classes as I was been raised under catholic values that mostly teaches you about humility and not about the material things. Even though my parents always taught me to be grateful when I had something, I did not. Sometimes | was so mad at God because I did not understand the reasons to be poor. One thing that I always remember was that in my mind I always saw myself living a better life without limits, My mom and I were always close, we used to go the backyard of my house every afternoon and have a cup of coffee and we started talking about different things, and I remember saying to her “one day I am going to have everything that I want and I going to take you with me” and she always with a smile on her face said to me one day you will understand why some people are poor, but most of the poor people are happy because money is necessary, the most important in life is to have love and a beautiful family like ours and the rest will come.

Now, is usual that every afternoon I like to go to my backyard and drink a cup of coffee, and I start thinking about my life and how blessed I am. My mom was right she always wanted the best for me, and I thought what my parents were giving was mean less. Now, most of the times I give thanks to god for everything that I have accomplished and now I understand that money is not the most important thing in life. In conclusion, having gone through the worst lows life experience, I learned that there still a lot things to be thankful for. Materials possessions may come and go, but the relationships you have with people you hold dear are clearly going to stay. after a while I learned that many of my friends from school had everything they wanted, but they did not have the most beautiful things that money cannot buy, love and affection from their parents, things that my parents gave me and now I appreciated and now I will pass along to my family.
