The Significance of Gender Equality in STEM Fields

Both female and male students studying STEM subjects perform equally well. But unfortunately this doesn’t work out going into the professional job because there is a gender gap. Men outnumber women in STEM fields.

Mention from the summary only eighty percent of students at the robotics competition were male and that gender gap is represented in STEM fields around the world. Also, the summary mentions that about 60 million girls don’t have access to education. This is why we need gender equality in STEM fields. Females are usually left out of scientific studies because there aren’t any in these fields. If we get more women into the STEM we could reduce the gender wage gap and ensure that single mothers don’t have to struggle. Also, there are more jobs in STEM than any other industry which are high-tech jobs that are high-paying. If both male and female get jobs in the STEM industry it would make a huge impact because then it will be equal and no one would discriminate.

In doing this, we not only empower women and girls, but move closer in creating a better world for everyone like men, boys, women, and girls.

Why are girls underrepresented in STEM fields?

I think girls are underrepresented in STEM fields because may be some girls chose to study STEM subjects at elementary school. I think girls are more attracted to subjects in the health department like becoming a nurse, doctor, etc. I can relate to this because when I was in elementary school I wanted to be a nurse because I saw how a nurse took care of students at school. She helps students when they need any medical assistance, she would always be caring and helpful. When I saw this and how patient and caring she was I decided I wanted to be a nurse ever since. I guess she was my role model when I grew up because now I want to study to become a Registered Nurse. I think students feel they would fit in better in subjects that had more of their own gender. Also, we approach domains where we feel we are successful and avoid those which aren’t. Some girls think they wouldn’t be capable to succeed in these subjects because they are being yield through stereotype. Some reasons that girls in the STEM fields are underrepresented could be an individual or complex factor outside in their life. Usually, the most important factor that occur would be due to family formation. Also, girls and young women are usually not interested in the subjects of science and engineering. I think girls interest in STEM fields may be explained by social attitudes and beliefs about whether it's right for them to pursue these subjects.

How could this be changed?

In order for this to be changed we need to attract more girls to study STEM fields and we need to tackle the stereotypes they are exposed to. An example to encourage girls is to use role models. For example, we can send young female graduate STEM students into schools to talk and inspire young girls to consider pursuing STEM fields. We should get girls interested in science and engineering by spreading the word about women’s achievements in math and science. We could teach students about stereotype threat and promote a better environment. Also, we could help girls recognize their career-relevant skills. We can recruit women into STEM majors. We could sponsor social events to all students to encourage interaction outside of class. Another way we could change this would be by creating school and job environments that allow girls and women to be comfortable and confident within the STEM fields.
