The Little Prince Moral Lesson

Categories: LoveMoral

The famous novella The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery teaches the young about responsibility through the relationships we have with people and the environment. While the novella was initially intended for children, it caught the eyes to everyone because of its deep meaning and lessons taught to us about responsibility. The theme of responsibility in this novella, however, is portrayed differently when it came to the adults and the children. The adults seemed to show their responsibility through materialistic things and the things they possessed, while “The Little Prince” showed his responsibility through love.

Although literary scholars Luke Glanville and Jérôme Pelenc give their own definition of the importance of responsibility, they don’t cover the aspect of care and love as seen in The Little Prince.

I argue that the importance of responsibility is in the loving relationships we have with people and the environment.

Although scholars such as Luke Glanville define responsibility as a notion of “accountability” in relationships (484), he doesn’t associate it with love.

In the Little Prince, however, love is the driving force behind responsibility.

It illustrates responsibility in caring for the things that one loves.

The novella suggests that the relationships that are associated with love are often tough to get over the idea of losing them. An example of this is from the passion and love the prince shows towards his rose and the responsibility he shows in taking care of the rose, which is like a child-parent relationship. Just like a parent will be, “The Little Prince” was worried about his rose that he left behind.

“If someone loves a flower, of which just one single blossom grows in all the millions and millions of stars, it is enough to make him happy just to look at the stars” (23).

The stronger the love the prince had for the rose in their relationship the more responsible he was in taking care of her and not losing that relationship they had.
