A journey or a quest both share a similar meaning. A quest is a journey or a long or arduous search for something. Many books revolve around the quest. In the Kite Runner, a Novel by Khaled Hosseini the main character Amir experiences a quest that completely changed him as a person.

Amir goes on the quest to rid himself from his past. When Amir was a child he made decisions that he couldn't take back and would dominate him for the rest of his life.

Amir watched his best friend get raped. While Amir watches Hassan get raped he considered whether or not it’s beneficial to help Hassan. “Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay in order to win over Baba.” The kite that Hassan and Amir shared was an essential piece to attaining Baba's heart. Amir craved Baba's attention and he needed to make him proud, He was so greedy that he was okay with allowing Hassan to be sexually assaulted as long as he was seen as worthy to his father.

If he stopped Assef from raping Hassan then Assef would take the kite. Hassan is so loyal to Amir that he allowed himself to withstand something life changing. He took it because he knew how important it was for Amir. Amir will do anything to impress his father so he did not protect Hassan, If he had there would be no kite for Amir to show off to Baba.

After the rape Amir could no longer be around Hassan, He could not bear the guilt he put upon himself, he was overwhelmed for not stepping in and protecting his friend from years of emotional pain just because of his own selfish needs. Amir wished to separate himself of Hassan. Amir tried to frame Hassen for stealing he says “I lifted Hassan's mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it” Amir placed the watch and money in Hassan's room, obviously with the goal of Hassan being blamed for stealing Amir’s birthday gifts. Amir's resentment over his father's love and care for Hassan caused him to make haste decision. When Amir made baba aware that the money and watch were missing, He was confident Hassan was the one that would he blamed for the missing presents. He did not anticipate Hassan to take fault for something he did not commit. He did not expect Baba to forgive him for the theft. Amir knew theft was a crime Baba did not condone and was sure it would get Hassan disowned. Even though Baba forgave Hassan and wanted him to stay. The situation was uncomfortable for Ali and Hassan, They moved out of Baba's home anyway. Amir's Selfishness caused him to fabricate lies and make irreversible mistakes. Amir's concealed emotion will continue to haunt him into adulthood.

Amir’s feelings of guilt and desperate desire for redemption were a part of his life when he was younger, and remained with him throughout adulthood. He thought after he deceived Hassan that it would negatively affect their relationship for the rest of their lives, Knowing that he still willingly abandons a friendship in an attempt to liberate himself from guilt. Amir realized that Even though Hassan is not in his life he still has a guilty conscience. After years of being haunted with sin of betrayal, Amir discovers a way to compensate for what he had done, though Hassan is no longer living. Amir initiates his quest for redemption after receiving a phone call from Rahim Khan saying,” There is a way to be good again”. Amir then makes his way to Rahim Khan in Pakistan. when he arrives he is told Hassan was more than a childhood friend he fooled, he was his half-brother. Hassans were murdered by the Taliban and sadly left behind Sohrab his only son. Rahim Khan pleads with Amir to bring Sohrab back home from the orphanage and Amir agrees. When he arrived at the orphanage he was told Sorab was not there, He was taken by the taliban. When he arrives at where Sohrab is supposed to be . Amir is greeted by AsseI instead, Assef was not going to allow him to take Sorab easy, he demanded a violent fight that had to result in death. After the fight Amir says “My body was broken just how badly I wouldn’t find out until later but I felt healed. Healed at last. I laughed” Amir was not a coward like he was when Hassan was being assaulted, He was gonna stay and fight for sorab no matter what because he knew it was right even if it meant putting himself in danger, After Assef beats Amir, He felt guilt-free. He sacrificed himself for Sohrab, he finally stood up for Hassan. Amir refused to save Hassan during the rape because it was not beneficial to him, He redeemed himself by putting himself in a position where he could get killed to save Sohrab and prove his dedication to redemption. Amir was hurt so bad he had to go to the hospital but he didnt care he felt great. When amir wakes up at the hospital Amir tells Sohrab “he can't give him his old life back, but that he can take Sohrab to America now” Amir was supposed to rescue Sohrab and leave him with a family in Pakistan. Instead, Amir wants to bring Sohrab to the United States and raise him. bravery and care is the act of redemption Amir needed to feel free, He freed himself from his own sins

Hassan got raped and took the blame for theft, a serious crime for baba and was consistently loyal and honest. Amir finally is able to redeem himself, he saved sorab and gave him a better life to repay Hassan and atone for his own sins. This displays that throughout the novel Amir was able to redeem himself and free himself from decades of guilt although Hassan was not there to personally appreciate what Amir did. Sorab will now have a better life because of Amir.
