The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini: Problem Of Betrayal

Somebody forgives someone who wasn’t there for them when they needed it the most when they were going through the most painful moment of their life when they treat that person the best they could when this person supported that person even if they were hurting too, would they? The protagonist, an Afghani-American named Amir, relays the story of his childhood: through this, one realizes the issues he went through and the events that will come to shape the plot of the novel.

Amir seeks redemption for his betrayal of his childhood best friend, Hassan. Because of his cowardice during Hassan’s rape, his betrayal of Hassan after the incident, and his committing of the vilest sin in Afghani culture, Amir must depart on a long and debilitating journey for the ultimate goal of total redemption that will take him back to his violent and war-torn homeland and beyond. Everyone deserves redemption, but only if remorse is experienced and actions are taken.

Hosseini shows this through some characters that achieve redemption and some who don’t.

The problems between Baba and Amir go deeper than Amir’s former failure as an athlete. They have never genuinely connected on an emotional level, so in a way, they don’t grow with each other. Baba can’t see any of himself in Amir and therefore doesn’t know how to connect with him. Baba’s actions lead the way to Amir thinking that he is not enough. Amir would do anything to be appreciated Amir observes, 'All I saw was the blue kite.

All I smelled was a victory. Salvation. Redemption ' (65). In IAmir’sr’s neighborhood, there is an annual kite-fighting tournament during the icy season when the schools close. Until this moment Amir has never won, leading up to Baba’s disrespect. Finally, during this tournament, Amir wins, sending a blue kite into the sky. Amir believes that at this moment, he has won redemption and salvation, for his father’s respect and his mother’s death he believes he caused. When he finally won the prize of his father’s attention he lost his loyal best friend and half-brother Hassan only a few hours later by allowing him to sacrifice himself so Amir could exchange his winning kite for his father’s acceptance. But Baba’s love went as soon as it arrived, and Amir was quickly becoming an outsider again. At this point, Baba shows how he doesn’t appreciate Amir as he should. 'It’s only going to cost you that blue kite'(74). Assef states, however, that Hassan still refuses to give up the kite. Amir stays hidden as he is scared to interfere. This results in the rape of Hassan by Assef due to Hassan refusing to give up the kite, showing his love for Amir as Amir values the kite due to the winning of the Kite Tournament with it. All that love that Amir direceiveeived from Baba caused him to not help his best friend. After some chapters, Baba doesn’t seem to care for Amir until Afghanistan got bad to the point where Amir and Baba had to leave the country. This is when Baba starts to care more about Amir; in the story, Baba leaves everything behind to move forward. Baba and Amiri immigrate to have a better future, especially Amir. Baba starts to care more about Amir and sometimes shows remorse for how he treated Amir in the past.

In conclusion. Ooncee the author shows how Amir starts to forgive his dad, Baba dies. Baba could have done something different to achieve forgiveness from Amir before he died, but the “could have” doesn’t exist, everything is done for something. The situation helped Amir to mature and grow as a better person, but also to realize the damage he caused to other people.
