Some movies are known to grab your heart and the emotions that come with it tend to sticks with you for a pretty long time. I will admit I'm a movie addict, I love to sit down and watch movies, but if it comes to a musical movie I really do need a lot of convincing to sit down and watch it. Why you ask? Well I tend to find musical based movies rather cheesy for myself and tend to critic it more then enjoy it.
But I will have to admit, watching the movie known as "The Greatest Showman" is something I will not forget nor do I even regret.
"The Greatest Showman" is about the life of a man named P.T. Barnum, known as the founder of what was called Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus and how it came to be. It showcases the unusual as a base of talent and also a form of business.
Unfortunately the real circus recently closed down in the past year but the memory of how it became still lives on. I remember seeing the preview when I was in fact watching another movie and I was rather curious but it wasn't enough for me to go and see it. It wasn't until I was forced by my loving boyfriend to company him, but because i was willing to give the movie a chance i said yes. Even though I will admit I was unhappy at first, I am very happy to say I was extremely surprised by the message and key points of the movie.
Because of this movie it is now clear to me why Hugh Jackman's singing and acting has in fact considered him to be a nominee for a Golden Globe this year.
In "the Greatest Showman" he starred as the famous P.T. Barnum and from the very start of the movie I had already felt entertained, excited and very interested. Hugh Jackman fit the part perfectly and even from the beginning you could easily believe that he was P.T. Barnum. Not only does he sweep you off your feet with is acting and singing so does the soundtrack of the movie.
As a girl who has been diagnosed with Paraplegia, which means that I am paralyzed from the waist down due to a past accident, I can really relate the the movies terms of embracing everyone's differences no matter what they are. This concept was represented almost immediately at the beginning of the movie when a woman who has a deformity is handing the young P.T Barnum an apple. I can't even begin to explain how nice it is to see a movie that portrays someone, anyone, who is different in a positive way. Barnum as a young boy had seemed to be intrigued by the unusual as represented in the movie. Unfortunately in the early 1880s acceptance of any kind of difference was almost unknown and if it was, it was the bare minimum. So Barnum took a gamble that people would come and pay to see the unusual and be entertained by them. But before he could even do that he had to convince those who were considered unusual to be involved in the show.
All the characters involved in the movie had excellent back stories, but within the film three main stories that stuck out to me the most. The first was a woman who has a beard and worked but always hid her face despite her amazing voice. The second was a man in his 20s who is considered to be a little person who lived hiding with his mum because of his unusual difference. And the last one was a woman who is extremely talented trapeze artist who happens to be an african american in a time of racism as well as falling in love for a white man. In all of these stories none of them could change who they were born to be even if they wanted to. But they were all courageous to get out there and show themselves to the world as the creative and talented people they are.
In fact the song "This is Me' that won a golden globe sums up everything the disability community has tried to convey to society. This song was mainly sung by the bearded woman. Some the of lyrics that stand out the most in the song are; I am not a stranger in the dark "Hide away" they say "Cause we dont want your broken parts" These were the opening lines of the song, and it talks about all the trials and obstacles that the bearded woman had gone through already. When she mentions the world "dark' what it shows is that this concept is not new to her because she had been there before and it doesn't go away. And that's where it continues when she sings the word "hide" which was stated by the people around her telling her she is different and she isn't normal so she must hide because everyone else doesn't want to associate with her. Soon after these lines in the song she sing's; … I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them outI am brave, i am bruised I am who i'm meant to be, this is me Look out cause here i come And i'm marching on to the beat i drum I'm not scared to be seen I make no apologies, this is me
