Everyone has a love language and a primary way of expressing and interpreting love. Expressing ourselves is something we do everyday, especially when we are showing someone how we feel. Words of affirmation, Quality time, Giving and receiving gifts, Acts of service, and Physical touch are the five universal love languages. Everyone expresses love and feels love by one of these love languages. “What if you could say or do just the right thing guaranteed to make that special someone feel loved? The secret is learning the right love language (Chapman)!”
I wanted to do my journal on the love languages we us in our relationships.
It’s funny to think that I had no idea what this was until I met my wife. Her mom was all about this, she even bought a copy of this book, “The Five Love Languages,” by Gary Chapman for all of her daughters to read before they got married. The reason she wanted them to have this book was to help them understand and recognize the different ways people feel and express love.
My wife for example, feels loved through quality time and physical touch. She’s all about holding hands and hugging and soft kisses on the forehead. Sometimes if I’m not paying attention to these things when we are out and about, or just at home she gets needy. But not in a bad way, she just helps me to remember that that’s how she likes to know she is loved.
I find that this is something that I can always work on to make sure our relationship is in tiptop shape.
I have found that being able to communicate the way that we feel about each other and expressing our love through these five universal love languages has made us a better and happier couple. We obviously have our disagreements from time to time but we can always revert back to these simple steps.
What are the love languages that you use in your relationships? After hearing or reading about the five love languages and identifying what yours is, how has this changed your relationship with the person you love?
