The Dictatorship In Animal Farm Essay

Dictatorship and power have affected people and when people cannot see or understand what’s going on that’s when at its worst. In this book, a group of animals is living with a dictator named Napoleon and really cannot see that. Animal Farm is about a group of animals on a farm who don’t like their owner. So a group of pigs takes control but the only one makes all the decisions and that’s Napoleon. In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, the dictatorship developed and/ or continued due to ignorance of followers and scapegoats.

To begin with, the dictatorship developed due to the ignorance of followers. In other words, the pigs took advantage of the animals who were easily convinced by the lack of knowledge. Before the rebellion, the animals gathered together, and they were discussing what will happen after the rebellion. Mollie the mare that was beautiful but wasn’t really intelligent asked snowball “and shall I still be allowed to wear ribbons in my mane?” (Orwell, 17).

This evidence shows that not only Mollie but some, other animals might not have as much education as the pigs. People who are dictators know how to use people who do not understand or comprehend what they should understand and comprehend. So, that’s also how they control people by observing their knowledge then go based on that piece of evidence. Another reason why dictatorship was developed due to the ignorance of followers is that the animals were easily persuaded.

After Mollie responded with another response Snowball was trying to teach her something, but she still didn’t understand him. Snowball is trying to tell Mollie that she is being enslaved “can you not understand that liberty is worth more than ribbons? …… Mollie agreed, but she did not sound very convinced” (Orwell, 17). Just how Hitler used the Jews as the problem, Napoleon is using Snowball. The animals think that Napoleon is right because he has been guiding them for long and think he will only make the best decisions for them. That right there is the reason why the animals cannot really see how controlling Napoleon really is. Another reason why dictatorship was developed due to scapegoats was that the pigs were never wrong. The animals used to think or get mind tricked that since Old Major was a smart and good decision maker that the other pigs would be that way too. Napoleon convinced the animals that Snowball was a murder than “The animals were shocked beyond measure to learn that even Snowball could be guilty of such an action. There was a cry of indignation, and everyone began thinking out ways of catching Snowball if he should ever come back.” (Orwell, 70). When dictator uses scapegoats they usually aim at those who people trust or wouldn’t see doing something bad. To the animals, the pigs were never wrong, so when they heard this about Snowball they never thought twice. When people feel safe or are following someone they don’t pay attention to the warning signs. This should've been a warning to the pigs but yet and still they felt safe and did not want to end up like Snowball.

Scapegoats and followers of ignorance lead to the dictatorship in Animal Farm. If the animals had paid close attention to the pigs and how they went about things dictatorship wouldn’t be the problem. Napoleon would have never got the chance to use the animals if they had more knowledge and realized what was going on. The pigs would have done the same amount of work and the boxer would have been resting. Everyone who reads this book can learn to pay attention to people who promise things quickly. People would also relate this book to what happened when Hitler controlled Germany and more.
