The American Dream Essay
The American Dream
The American Dream was once a belief that where if you worked hard and went to school you can succeed and go into your dream job, get married, by a house and have kids and live life happily ever after. Now a days you can’t get a job that you majored in when you went to college right away you have a better shot of getting a job making pizzas. So what happened to the American Dream? It died just like this country eventually will. Three reasons that the American Dream is dead are: the economy is poor; the government is bad, and the educational opportunities are diminishing.
One reason that the American Dream is dead is because the economy is poor. In the article The American Dream is Dead its states that “35% of respondents said they had spent retirement or personal savings to supplement their wages.” That’s because of the economy is bad and they don’t want to lose their houses. That article also states that “The homeownership rate in America is now at its lowest level in nearly 18 years.” Also in the article it says “49% of all Americans live in a home in which one or more residents receive monetary benefits from one or more government programs (i.e. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps). Back in 1983, less than a third of all Americans lived in a home that received direct monetary benefits from the federal government.”
Another reason why the American Dream is dead is because the government is poor. The government is so bad that in the past they had to shut it down because they couldn’t agree on a spending bill to help run the government. Like what government shut itself down because they couldn’t agree on a bill to help them run a poor one. In the article The American Dream is Dead; Long Live the New Dream it says “the government is destroying the American Dream by putting so many taxes on the middle class.”
Another reason why the government is bad is because they all these companies go overseas and that means people lost their jobs which made the unemployment rate go up. Also our debt is up to 17 trillion like why won’t the government stop borrowing money from other countries if we keep doing this no country is going to let us borrow money from them. We should not rely on other countries. The democrats and republicans need to come together and stop being so stubborn so they can turn this country around and make it better.
The last reason he American Dream is dead is because educational opportunities are diminishing. Some kids can’t afford to go to college because it’s too expensive. In the article The American Dream is Dead; Long Live the New Dream it states that “7% of acceptance rate dropped in the past year” High interest rates are making people not wanting to go to college because they can’t afford it. They are now grading teachers so they are more worried about how they are doing instead of helping the kids. Tuition is too expensive for families whose income has dropped to minimum wage in some cases and lack of federal funding has put the burden on the students. Students can’t pay back the loans they get from the bank to help them pay for college. Some people might think that the American Dream is still alive. Some people think that because there is still social mobility there is still a middle class and it is thriving well.
It is still alive people say because people are still getting some education even though when they graduate they might not get the job they wanted right out of college but eventually they will. In the article The American Dream: alive and well it states that the average American family makes around $54,000 a year. It also states that “In terms of education, nearly 90 per cent of Americans between the ages of 25 and 64 have earned the equivalent of a high school diploma, which is above average.” Which means people are getting there education. There are also still carrier opportunities in America. Three reasons that the American Dream is dead are: the economy is poor; the government is bad, and the educational opportunities are diminishing. The American Dream was once very real but now it’s just a dream because there the economy is bad, the government isn’t doing its job right and the educational opportunities are diminishing before our eyes. If we stopped taxing the middle class it will help and hopefully the economy goes back so people will spend more and maybe just maybe we will see the American dream back and alive.
