Writers aspire to capture "the world," but no single writer can fully achieve this. Therefore, literature should include a wide range of writers, as each offers their unique perspective, providing fragments of understanding. Regardless of whether it is Tolstoy or Raymond Chandler, every writer can only offer their own limited understanding. The works that endure should be considered as "literature," as they successfully capture a fragment of life that can be seen, read, and understood. Perhaps it is best to let a writer have the final say regarding the essence of the writer's art: Every artist strives to freeze motion, which represents life, using artificial means to preserve it. Through the progression of Jack and Roger's increasingly violent and wicked behavior as they abandon societal expectations and Ralph's ability to retain his goodness due to his strong connection with society, Golding posits that humans are born immoral and necessitate societal influence for moral development. Jack repeatedly demonstrates true evil as his ties with society diminish over time. Upon their initial arrival on the island, Jack and the other boys are mostly virtuous because they retain a fresh recollection of societal expectations.

Ralph is elected as chief, and Jack begrudgingly accepts because he assumes an adult would reprimand him otherwise, despite the absence of adults on the island. In essence, Jack is accustomed to having authoritative figures around who would scold him for challenging authority, so he lets it pass. Over time, Jack realizes that there is no one who can dictate his actions. When this realization fully sinks in, he questions Ralph's leadership by claiming, "He isn't a proper chief...He's a coward himself" (126). This awareness of his newfound power makes Jack feel incredibly empowered, leading him to accuse Ralph of being an inept leader and subsequently desert the group. Jack moves to the other side of the island with his fellow hunters and engages in mercilessly killing pigs. Understanding that there is no clear right or wrong, he forms a savage tribe that most of the boys join. As the chief, Jack exerts complete control over the tribe and hosts terrifying feasts where they feast on the pigs they mercilessly slaughtered. They chant phrases such as "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" (182), while reenacting the slaying of pigs and pretending to harm one another.

The fact that no one challenges Jack and his tribe’s terrible actions encourages Jack to further demonstrate his power. In the end, Jack reaches his most wicked state by commanding his tribe to kill Ralph without hesitation. The twins, Sam and Eric, who were forced to join Jack's savage group, recount what Jack said about Ralph: “And Ralph, Jack, the chief, says it will be dangerous ––– and we’ve got to be careful and throw our spears like at a pig” (188-189). By falsely portraying Ralph as a threat, Jack commands the tribe to kill him, giving them a justification for their actions. Through Jack's statement that they have to "throw our spears like at a pig", Golding shows how he dehumanizes Ralph in order to eliminate any hesitation in the tribe's decision to kill. Initially, Jack starts off like any other child on the island – happy, enthusiastic, and excited for the adventure that lies ahead. However, as time goes on, Jack gradually becomes more sinister.
