Strategies Against Modern Slavery: A Collaborative Approach for Sustainable Solutions

Categories: Modern Slavery

Makes slave labour a significant part of the global supply chain. As NGOs play an important role in this issue, their employment choice and rigorousness will account for the impact of the solution. The AU thus can take measures from the side of the NGOs. A system and regulation laws can be set up to supervise the situation and the employment of the NGOs. Penalties and punishment can be set up so as to penalize those NGOs, which still employ slaves and still allow the continuance of modern slavery.

In February 2018, the French Parliament introduced a new law, which requires businesses or companies to identify risks to human rights and the environment in their operations.

Although the law’s criteria mean it applies to fewer businesses than the U.K.’s Modern Slavery Act, businesses have more specific requirements to follow when publishing their reports on the issue. It shows that the feasibility of setting up a secure system is high as more businesses or NGOs are now focusing more on the problem of modern slavery. On the other hand, since the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act, earlier this year, the penalties are becoming tougher for businesses. All the member states of the AU are suggested to carry out the measure. Once the measure is introduced in countries, it’s coverage is high. It covers all the businesses and even small citizens in the countries. The profoundness is also deep as it directly affects the profit of the NGOs from the economic aspect.

The time frame can be set up within 5 years as the economic conditions and the financial stability may change through time.

Support to the Empowerment of People to be Better Protected from Slavery To solve the roots of the problem, work should be done to the grass-root level. Poverty is a major reason for people becoming slaves. To solve the problem of poverty, the AU can set up laws or acts to supervise the education of member states, to ensure the next generation of young people will have equal opportunities to gain knowledge at school. Subsidies can be provided by the AU to introduce those regulations or systems. To conclude, this measure is to solve the root problem of modern slavery. In the other hand, supporting services can be provided to victims of slavery to encourage them to escape from slavery. Both physical and psychological support is suggested.

After receiving help from people or social workers, victims or people engage in slavery, might escape from slavery and starts a better life. In the United Kingdom, a 24-hour hotline has been established that allows people to call and ask for help is operated in India. Moreover, they provide psychological and legal support to victims of slavery, ensuring that they get recovered, obtain justice and compensation. The organization also provides financial support, shelter, as well as vocational training to people who escape from slavery. Last but not least, they empower victims to work again at the grassroots level to ease racism and gender inequality. In this case, human rights are respected. Anti-Slavery International helped 77,388 victims to claim their rights, which shows that these measures are effective and successful. The effectiveness and feasibility are high when it is being utilized.

This measure covers all the young generation of those state members of the AU. It provides a better environment for the young generation to grow and study. Skills and knowledge are gained. As the measures are carried out from the young generation, it affects the future development of society and the government. The profoundness is thus deep and visionary. The timeframe has to be set within 10 years as education is a long way to go and to educate the next generation. After skills are obtained and knowledge is gained, they will have a higher chance to reach a higher social status. Thus, they can escape from modern slavery. Enhancing the Collaboration Between the Government and NGOs Knowing that the African Union is a unit serving and aiding African countries, the African Union should work with different non-governmental organizations in parts of Africa to get to know more about the slavery situation in different countries specifically.

This is done for different benefits. Firstly, it allows the African Union to gain a different perspective on the slavery crisis. With African slavery being a widespread phenomenon across the continent, different countries may have unique factors that lead to unique situations in terms of their severity of slavery or types of slavery. For example, Chad is notorious for its huge number of child slaves, and Ghana, Togo and Benin have numerous ritual servitude slaves. Each country is non-identical in its own way, and it is hard for the African Union to know so much detail from each member country. Therefore, when collaborating with NGOs of different countries, it allows the African Union to gain a wider perspective of the situation.

As a result, allowing the Union to make solutions catering to each country, raising the effectiveness and suitability. Secondly, it lets the Union meet partners that are achieving the same target to solve the problem of African slavery. The African Union can make policies and measures with more resources and materials. With another organization's resources and knowledge, it can soothe the Union's burden while being able to achieve the same target. Therefore, when encouraging collaboration between the union and NGOs, it can increase the effectiveness of proposing policies and implementing specific solutions.
