Should Cigarette Smoking Be Banned

Categories: HabitSmoking

In this rapidly developing and dog- eat dog world of ours; we are constantly striving for change, often pushing ourselves beyond boundaries unforeseen just a few decades ago. Ironically, this growth mindset is what contributed to our downfall as people; it serves as a constant reminder of the bane of development and revolution for years to come. Cigarettes were ever present since the early ages, however its popularity did not reach to great heights until the cigarette machine was invented, for many it was “the beginning of an end”as smoking was often followed by a downward spiral into a life of vices and sin.

It is impossible to argue against the fact smoking is one of the biggest problems in today's society. Be it our younger generation or older individuals, smoking seems to be overwhelmingly prevalent. However i strongly believe such an act is selfish; and affects the health of many not just the smoker, hence i strongly espouse the view that smoking should be banned in most public areas however with some exceptions.

One reason I strongly believe that smoking should be banned in most public places due to the negative effects second hand smoke has on others.

Many studies have shown how not only does smoking jeopardise one health it also causes others around you to be more vulnerable to diseases. Many heart diseases are often brought about due to inhaling too much second hand smoke. Infact, A shocking study made by a group of researchers has shown that by simply being exposed to a smoker could the chances of you contracting lung cancer increase 30 percent! What makes it even worse is that second hand smoke has even been proven to affect one’s health worse than first hand smoke.

Hence I strongly espouse the view that smoking should be banned in all public places. As the actions of one selfish individual should not affect the wellbeing of others, smokers should be thought to spare thought for others, as it’s simply not fair for others to fall ill at one selfish individual's expense.

Another reason I believe smoking should be banned and especially in public places, is the effect smoking has on the environment, many national parks are often found to be littered with cigarette buds. This affects the flora and fauna in such locations, as the toxic waste from such cigarette buds often seep into the ground upon being littered. Many smokers also carelessly dispose of their cigarettes into waterways such as lakes and ponds. Unsuccespecting animals which may come across them might accidentally consume them choking them in the process, not to mention the chemicals released from the cigarette also affects water quality in large amounts even killing the animals that live within, it even affects us humans as much of the chemicals and toxic waste in the water may be consumed as people choose to go swimming or drink from such lakes. To emphasise smoking also affects the environment as it contaminates the air we breathe. Many toxic chemicals are released when someone smokes, again causing us to fall ill. Hence i strongly believe that smoking should be banned in public places as it impacts our environment adversely

One reason however, I strongly believe cigarette smoking should be tolerated and not banned is due to the impact it has on the economy. Countries like China and the United Kingdom rely on the sale of cigarettes to make money. It is even proven that roughly 7 percent of China total income comes from the sale of cigarettes, Hence It's simply not possible to prevent smoking in public places as a large portion of their income come from the sale of cigarette, however f such a case actually happens, i believe that it is indeed essential for governments to enforce stricter fines on smokers in public places. It is undeniable that many smokers are working millennials as the only way they can maintain such a lifestyle. Hence most of them are likely to smoke in public places near the city center. Therefore I believe that the government should implement designated smoking zones, preferably further away from public areas, this prevents smokers from affecting the health of others around them whilst still being able to sell cigarettes; a win-win for both parties. However if Individuals choose to ignore such rules and regulations they should be heavily charged this also helps to ensure that the economy is not so adversely affected from the ban cigarettes in public areas, and it also serves as a deterrent for others in the process

In conclusion i believe that despite smoking being a matter of choice and a freedom of expression, smokers should be civic minded as they need to realise it affects everyone not just themselves !
