“Self-reflection is the examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings” (“Self-reflection”, 2020) and is one of the most important things that I have learned throughout my life that has helped me on every level of living. The outcome of self-reflection for me has not always been one that I relished in, however accepting what was learned from this act made it easier for me to move forward. The good, the bad and the ugly, pretty much sums up the outcome of this self-reflection, and has helped me to become a better person.
The act of self-reflecting can prove beneficial in our daily lives, and especially in the workplace and various roles thereof.
Leaders in the workplace creates examples with their staff, which can be either negative or positive, and affects other areas of a business or organization. Having worked in the healthcare industry for the past 34 years, I have come to agree that leadership styles are a very important part of how staff works together, which essentially affects patient treatment (Dodson, 1998-2020).
As a leader, I think of myself as caring, committed and focused. This does not mean that I feel as if I am perfect, however it does mean that I am a person whom cares for their staff and committed to setting the best possible example for them to follow, while focusing on creating a positive environment for them to work in, and meeting our organization’s goals. I can honestly say that I have learned as much from them as they have from me, and that is always a good thing.
Leaders are not solely responsible for those they oversee with job duties and responsibilities but are also the “go to” person with their staff in times of work-related distress. By engaging in self-reflection as a leader, derives a successful leader.
My leadership purpose is to generate my strengths (knowledge, behavior) to those around me, encourage them to aim higher, praise them for works, create a trust with them and show them that we are all in this together. I know that from my experience with leaders, being able to establish a trust with them went a long way. Creating that atmosphere of positiveness, especially during times when there is conflict among staff, can produce a positive outcome when leaders take time to address the conflict and help to create an outcome that works for everyone.
Actively pursuing my Master of Healthcare Administration, my current class “Leading With Authenticity in the Health Sector” has given me more insight as to the areas that I could improve on, not only to help create a more productive person, but to also show this in how I interact with others in helping to create more positiveness, be it in life and/or in the workplace. I can not stress enough how important it is to be honest with oneself in acknowledging what improvements they can benefit from, putting the actions into motion and watch as how this helps to create a better person.
Let us not forget that as humans we could all benefit from self-reflecting. There is a quote that I recently came across that best describe my interaction with self-reflection: “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom—Aristotle” (“Good Reads”, 2020).
