Romeo and Juliet: Don’t Let Your Emotions Make Your Decisions

Categories: William Shakespeare

Romeo and Juliet is about two lovers from two rival families. They love each other so much that they start rushing, and this leads to their untimely death. In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare presents two lovers that make bad decisions to establish the theme that you shouldn’t let your emotion make your choices. In the story, bad decisions are made when Romeo goes to Capulet’s party, Friar Laurence agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet, and Lord Capulet forces Juliet to marry Paris.

Romeo made a bad decision when he went to the party because he was not invited and the party was held by his rival. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo says “And we mean well in going to this mask,/ But ‘tis no wit to go” He let his emotions for Rosaline get in the way of his common sense. This shows that even though he knew it was a bad idea to go to the ball, he still went anyway.

Friar Laurence shouldn’t have agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet, he knew it was going to end up in trouble. Friar Laurence says “Oh, she knew well/ Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell./ But come, young waverer, come, go with me,/ In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancor to pure love”. Friar Laurence is letting his desire to make the Montague and Capulets happy take control over his decision making.

This shows that even though he knew their marriage would not end well, he did it anyway.

Lord Capulet allowed Juliet to marry anyone but he later changed his mind due to Juliet being sad. Capulet says “My will to her consent is but a part./ An she agreed within her scope of choice,/ Lies my consent and fair according voice”. After Tybalt’s death, he says “Doth she not give us thanks?/ Is she not proud? Doth she not count her blessed,/ Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought/ So worthy a gentleman to be her bride?”. Lord Capulet has made a mistake when he decided to change his mind and force Juliet to marry, which later caused Juliet’s death. This shows that Lord Capulet should’ve let Juliet choose her own husband and ultimately save her life.

Romeo shouldn’t have gone to the party, Friar Laurence shouldn’t have agreed, and Lord Capulet shouldn’t have forced Juliet to marry. Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet decide to love each other when their families are fighting to point out that you shouldn’t let your emotions make your decisions. One thing that can be learned from this is that you should think about the consequences before deciding to do anything.
