The romantic yet tragic play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, tells the story of two young star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, where they face different conflicts due to the affection they have for each other. I believe that what Romeo and Juliet had was not love, they were infatuated with each other and their relationship was based on desire and lust. Love is a very strong and deep feeling towards a person. When you love someone you are not only interested in them physically, but also emotionally.
Infatuation is a feeling of desire to be with a person. When you are infatuated with someone you have feelings like desperation, anxiousness and excitement to be with them. The reason why I’m certain that Romeo and Juliet are on a love-struck is because they believed they were in love instantly and rushed things into getting married.
Love takes time and patience. You can’t just say you’re immediately in love with someone you haven’t even gotten to know.
Love grows over time when you get to connect deeply with someone and you develop feelings for who they are. At the beginning of the story, Romeo claimed to be in love with another woman named “Rosaline”, and then as soon as he locked eyes with Juliet he describes her beauty and says, “Did my heart love till now?Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” . In that moment, he believed that he never loved anyone the way he loved Juliet before.
Romeo hasn’t even approached Juliet and already states that he’s in love with her. To say that you feel true love towards an individual, you need to get to know them and build a friendship first before starting a relationship. Another hint of infatuation in the play was when Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him to Juliet, the Friar says to him, “These violent delights have violent ends.” meaning that these sudden acts of love can lead to a dangerous end. He also says,“Therefore love moderately. Long love doth so.” Lawrence’s quote proves that he thinks he’s taking this relationship too sudden, therefore he gives him advice to slow things down and take his time because that is the key to a healthy, long-lasting love.
There’s many other reasons why Romeo and Juliet prove to be infatuated. In my opinion, the main reason why is because of their hurry and how they rushed things into getting married without even getting to know each other deeply. A relationship should be built with time and should have a connection with that person. Their words and risky actions show sign of desperation to be with each other without even thinking of the outcomes. Therefore, I believe that Romeo and Juliet are infatuated and not in love.
