Role of Parents in Building Effective School Climate

This chapter presents the summary of the major findings, conclusion and recommendation based on research objectives. The study intended to assess the role of parents in building effective school climate in secondary schools in Ilala Municipality- Dar es Salaam. The researcher used convergent parallel research design where both qualitative and quantitative approach were used in the single study. The researcher used mixed research method in the study where questionnaire and interview analysis were used in collecting data among teachers, students heads of schools and parents.

The data were analyzed using the statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20 version. Descriptive statistics were presented through frequencies and percentages for quantitative data through tables, graphs, pie charts and histograms and the qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings were presented basing on the objectives of the study. Suggestions for further studies were also presented.

The major findings of this research objective demonstrated that parents contribute a lot in school buildings they attend meetings, solve academic issues, solve discipline cases and participate in school welfare.

From the findings it was revealed that parents were not so much involved in school activities that they were not attending meetings, collect students reports, they cannot solve disciplinary cases like truancy and dropout and cannot even contribute to renovate the school and hence causing poor performance. However, this made the interpersonal relationship among teachers and parents to be low. The researcher also revealed that organizing parents meeting has both positive and negative impact to the school.

Parents who contribute ideas in the meetings and in school in general are educated ones and middle income people while illiterate and low income parents feel inferior and are passive in the meetings.

Challenges facing school heads in involving parents in building school climate

From the findings it was clearly stated that most of the parents are reluctant that they were not monitoring students' progress, attending meetings, contribute for remedial program, contribute for meals and even construction new classes to overcome the problem of overcrowding. Also, the introduction of free basic education has become a bottleneck to the parent's involvement in school activities. However, this affect the performance of the students. Moreover the findings displayed that, parents lack seriousness in education matters giving priority to other things like graduation, undertaking small business, taking care of the siblings and other things. There is a need for the government to enforce parents to adhere to their major roles as parents

Suggestions to improve parental involvements after the implementation of free education policy

The findings from objective three were suggested that school heads to be given seminars, workshop and training so as to improve relationship with teachers even the curriculum for teacher training should added the content that relate to relationship with parents this this would enrich school head in relationship with parents while handling the schools. School head should retain the formal communication skills with parents including writing letters, inviting parents coming to school, having meetings together, discussing together for discipline matter , organizing mobilization activities like Elimu day competition', cultural day, talent show and sport bonanza this would make students appreciate their creativity for academic performance. However for parents this would help build the team work spirit, love one another, cooperation

Conclusion

The conclusion based on the summary and conclusion of the findings. From the findings the researcher concluded that the role of parents is very crucial and it contribute a lot to students' performance. Parents are expected to attending meetings and become productive in school meetings. However it has been observed that parents were for so long not participating fully in school activities hence municipal management in Ilala should increase and renovate the school facilities for teacher retention and for the motivation to students to study hard. Moreover, different suggestions were given such as training, seminar and workshop, writing letters to parents, communication through phone, mobilization activities and using government or political leaders in the area to sensitize parents to take part in shaping the school climate.

The researcher revealed that the fee free basic education policy' has many benefit to parents and students as well. Apart from that it has negative impact to the school since parents have laid down tools as the presidents insisted no any contribution from parents to school is allowed. The government should let education professionals to give explanations on the fee free basic education policy,' its implication and the aftermath such that measures to be taken to parents who do not support their children and the school as well. The schools will continue suffering from overcrowded classes, bad condition of infrastructure, indiscipline cases and poor performance. Furthermore, the school heads have a lot to do to educate parents to participate in school activities positively. Teachers and school heads have to strengthen relationship with parents and practice transparency attitude. Parents need to understand that they are responsible for their students' academic life in school. It is well known that there are other responsibilities as parents to perform but they should spare time to participate in school to achieve quality education.The fee free basic education policy' has many benefit to parents and students as well. The study also Majority of the teachers are less experienced as they are fresh from colleges. The study revealed the employment age in many schools range from 26-37 years. The policy makers/government should consider mixing the working experience and experienced one so that they can learn or mentor each one in the school.5.4 Recommendations for actionBasing on the findings, discussion, interpretation, summary and conclusion; the following recommendations were made in order to rectify or combat the challenges raise in the study.

  1. The government need to find a room for explanation to the parents and the whole community about the implementation of the Fee free basic education policy so that they can have a clear understanding of the policy.
  2. Policy makers need to incorporate in the curriculum training to head of schools on how best they can train parents for better participation in school climate.
  3. Also it was recommended that policy makers need to find a better way of employing the teachers in the newly built schools to create a good composition of experience teachers with those fresh from college to have a better such that the young can learn from their senior teachers
  4. Heads of school need to create a friendly environment for both teachers, students and parents when they visit schools so that they can solve the problems concerning academic matters, infrastructure and discipline for better improvement of school climate.

Recommendation for further studies

  1. Further studies should be conducted to investigate the changing roles of parents after the implementation of the fee free basic education policy involving many schools with both private and government to reveal the role of parents in improving the school climate.
  2. More research to be done to determine whose responsibility to shape school climate, the government or the parents orb the community around the school
