Categories: Robin Hood

Executive Summary

This case study is about Robin Hood and his Marrymen’s run-ins with the Sheriff of Nottingham. In the second year of revolt of Robin against Sheriff, with large numbers of recruits, pouring in, from every corner of England, Robin met his objective of strengthening man force. Although he was satisfied with the strength of the band, he realized resources and funds are insufficient to meet the needs of the organization, but they cannot drop the idea of “Robbing the Rich and Giving to Poor”.

To sort with the problem of decreasing revenues, Robin proposed the idea of taxing his allies. Also, they need to stay focused on their major goal to reinstate King Richard, the Lionheart, to the position of Prince, as to ensure future amnesty for Robin Hood and his men.

And Robin’s idea of taxing his own allies, to meet the finance problem, was unfavorable to the farmers and the townspeople’. But current management structure proves out to be a chaos because of lawlessness and mismanagement. ISSUES

It is not meeting their financial needs and thus causing low productivity among them. * The band is rising at an uncontrollable rate in Sherwood Forest which thus is not able to provide sanctuary and the provisions; the band needs to survive, whereas, the sheriff's men are growing stronger and better organized. * The rich merchants, who once passed through Sherwood Forests, are now changing routes so as to escape from their goods being confiscated by Robin Hood’s band, which is causing loss of revenue.

Little John is facing difficulty in controlling discipline because of large size of band that he is in-charge of overseeing. * If Robin accepts the Baron's invitation to join their campaign and it fails, Robin could cause himself and his band suffer consequences in the court. But it would be a good political move if Robin shows little support in the efforts that Barons’ are making as to release King Richard from jail. * As Robin himself stated, that he can hardly recognize half of the men in his group, an ever growing threat was the great number of spies loyal to Prince John.

STRENGTHS| WEAKNESS|

  • Strengthened man force skilled in stealing and raiding,
  • Strong leadership,
  • Willing to change policies,
  • Potential alliance to save King Richard,
  • Designated lieutenants to carry out tasks.|
  • Indiscipline among marrymen,
  • No fixed criteria to fight against Sheriff
  • Robin Hood didn’t know most of the men he encountered,
  • Taxing his alliance,
  • Unable to manage finance and resources during man force expansion,
  • Putting things off until tomorrow and lack of team work,
  • Miscommunication.

OPPORTUNITIES| THREATS|

  • New recruits could help them better,
  • Future amnesty,
  • Fixed tax could be implemented to raise revenues.|

  2. Fixed transit tax policy?

PRO’s & CONS
QUESTION| SUGGESTIONS| DECISION CRITERIA| PRO| CONS|

a) Kill Sheriff?

  • | No| Not in a better position to fight with Sheriff|
  • Less risk|
  • Sheriff can attack any time.|
  • Collaborate with Barons?| Yes| Put efforts in getting King Richard back to get rid of Sheriff & Prince John in one fell swoop.|
  • If successful, they would be granted future amnesty|
  • Risk of lives of Robin and his group.| c) Tax Policy?| No| No Risk involved|
  • More money would flow in and needs could be met.|
  • Would cause more people to left because of excessive tax policy|

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Fixed transit tax should not be enforced; this will surely disperse the townspeople who always supported Robin. If the townspeople’s support is lost, they might not provide any kind of help to Robin and his merrymen. The only exception can be, if funds are needed immediately, then transit tax could be imposed for a temporary period.
  • Just collaborating with the Barons cannot be a solution as in case of failure of mission being carried out by Baron’s, could cause loss of lives to Robin and his men.
  • Killing the Sheriff does not help out in bailing King Richard and Prince John then may appoint a new Sheriff opting similar strategy. Hence killing the Sheriff would only be a temporary shift of focus from current issues.
