Prohibition of Corporal Punishment in the Correctional System by Morgan Strand

Categories: Corporal Punishment

There is a fine line between what should be tolerated and what should be banned. The common occurrence in our world is child abuse. Yes Corporal Punishment can be used as a last option for bad behavior for your child but many parents in the U.S use it and take it too far from beating their child, and can even reach to almost all assault, sometimes even sexual assault is often used.

We also have a position in this we found and researched that Corporal punishment can lead to aggressive behavior and while parents and teachers across the U.

S are showing aggressive behavior causing the child to begin showing aggressive behavior outside the house. And when the child grows up they will only remember the way they were raised so they will show the behavior to their child most likely, and the cycle goes on.

To begin, there are many parents that cross the line and beat their child and leave scars, red marks, bruises, and other things that you can see that REALLY hurt for the child causing sleeplessness and other effects.

Did you know that Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S normally. Also National Statistics on Child Abuse says , “. . . an estimated 683,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in 2015, the most recent year for which there is national data. (click the National Statistics on Child Abuse text for website)

Also, 19 states legally permit corporal punishment in public schools, while 31 states ban corporal punishment (physical punishment) and pretty much a punishment that involves hitting someone.

In K-12 schools, corporal punishment is often spanking, with either a hand/paddle, or striking a student across his or her hand with a ruler or leather strap (which hurts A LOT!).

More severe instances, including the use of a chemical spray and Taser, have also been recorded by US schools. In 2014, 94% of parents with children three to four years old reported that they had spanked their child within the past year, and 76% of men and 65% of women agreed with the statement, 'a child sometimes needs to learn through a spanking.' Which only sometimes I agree, but if we keep the practice legal in the remaining 19 states it will get worse as time goes by. The kids that experience the more aggressive “teaching method” will show the same behavior to their children and on and on the cycle goes.

Children are abused at all ages, Kids ages 13-17 in 2015 were abused %26 of the time, kids ages 0-6 were abused %37 of the time, and kids ages 7-12 were abused %37 of the time. But in 2014, a survey went around and 81% of parents say that spanking their children is only SOMETIMES appropriate. 35% of children experienced some form of corporal punishment at least once per year. 26% of men 18-59 reported having been spanked or slapped by parents as a child. While lots of people think corporal punishment is ok and personally I agree but kids learn that slapping and hitting kids is ok and will be more likely to get in a fight and be aggressive, and do you ant you child to get into fights, be a bully, and get suspended or expelled that brings you out of work and hurting your paycheck that keep a roof over your head. As Mr. White says,”You do you boo”

Corporal punishment has been banned in US prisons, that we all know that people that have done worse things than take someones dinosaur toy to go to prison. And military training,(Which is pretty intense) and animals are protected from the same sort of punishment in every state. Also, Study driver says, “Students who experience corporal punishment in kindergarten are more likely to have lower vocabulary scores in fourth grade and lower fifth grade math scores.” And you want your child to succeed in school, right?

According to the National Women's Law Center, 'Harsh physical punishments do not improve students' in-school behavior or academic performance. In fact... schools in states where corporal punishment is used perform worse on national academic assessments than schools in states that prohibit corporal punishment.'

I would write more but I am afraid this it is time to go, I want you to think about this. Yes not all parents take corporal punishment take it to the abuse level, but I just want you to take one second and think about the miserable children that are being impacted by corporal punishment, being scared going to bed, getting bruises from parents that think beating a child is ok, just think about it.
