Necessity Of College Degree For Success

The link between a college education and a successful career is in students’ minds across the country every year as they get closer to graduating from high school. We are told as we grow up that education is extremely important, and life usually illustrates this for us daily. The more that you know, the better equipped you are to solve problems and get things done. But, how far does this link go? To be successful in life, is there a standard of education that will guarantee a certain attainable level? Within modern society, there are now more avenues for success than ever before, and they do not all require or start with a college degree level of education.

This paper will discuss the main reason why I believe that college is not necessary for success, but also make clear the benefits to improving your education at every stage in life.

The question “is college necessary for success?” comes to mind around the crucial time of graduation, and it can come along with a lot of stress and uncertainty.

We go to school every day to learn more skills that we are told will help us get a better job and a better future. As a student myself, I know exactly how misleading this teaching can be. This is our future that is being considered, and we need to find out what tools will best benefit us on our journey to success. There are so many angles to the question, and as every individual is on a different path in life, there is really no definitive answer to whether a college education will make you specifically more successful.

However, certain views and ideas should be considered when making these big decisions about your future.

The first thing that may come to mind is the vast number of people who have made a lot of money without ever graduating from college. Bill Gates is one of the most popular examples that comes to most people’s minds. He went to college but did not graduate. He then went on to create a multi-billion-dollar company. So, the first question people ask is always “so why should I go to college?” What these people do not always consider is the effort that Bill Gates put into his project with Microsoft and the desire that he had to turn it into something great. Without this desire, had he just dropped out and tried to find a job elsewhere, he would most likely not be as successful as he is today. This can be backed up by the information provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tells us that in “2015 those over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree earned an average of $459 per week more than those who only completed high school “.

From the figures quoted above, it may seem obvious that, in general, a college education does give you a higher chance of making more money, but once again it is important to consider the fact that it is always going to be different for every person. If your college degree takes 4 years, and you do not complete any additional work during this time, you will be launched into the job market with little to no experience. This can make it very difficult to get a job, and so you may start in your 20s on a relatively low salary. This could be compared with those who graduate high school and go into the job market immediately. Although it can be hard to find a job that does not require a degree, especially today, it is possible and only requires effort. They would then work for 4 years, perhaps gaining promotions and getting a better salary than those who graduate college that same year. So, at the end of the 4-year spell, you might say that those who chose to work for 4 years are now more successful than those who are just out of college looking for a job.

This last point emphasizes the notion that there really are a multitude of angles to take when answering this question. You have to take into account your own abilities, both academically and practically. A lot of experience in the working environment may be more valuable to you if you wish to take on a management role at a company, however, if you want to become a professor at a University it is clear that a college degree is essential. Therefore, to answer this question, you have to consider by what you measure your own success. It is relative, and so you have to make your choices in line with where you want to go with your life, and not simply where other people tell you that you should go.

So, there is no one answer to the question, but in fact a variety of answers for the various situations in which you may find yourself when the time comes to decide whether or not to go into further education. It could be the best decision for you, or it could really hinder your chances of success. The bottom line is that there are many roads to success, and you must simply choose the ones that work best for you. If at first, they do not lead you on the right path, it is never too late to change your mind about what you want to do with your life.
