My Strongest Trait is Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is very essential for every day to day life because it requires thinking and processing. This objective requires constant analysis and developing thoughts and more based on these analyses. One may ask them what makes a critical thinker a critical thinker. A critical thinker can be defined by many characteristics which define just to what extent they are critical thinkers, varying from them being open-minded to analytical, or even the lack of these characteristics can define them as well.

While many characteristics would define the type of critical reader that I am either by providing the strengths within critical thinking characteristics or the weakness there are so many options. Through the contrasting critical thinking traits, the traits that truly express my critical thinking traits are listening open-mindedly to opposing points of view and welcoming criticisms of beliefs of assumptions, being skilled at understanding, analyzing, and evaluating arguments and viewpoints, can be easily distracted and cannot zero in on the essence of an issue or problem and tend to engage in what is known as “groupthink.

My strongest critical thinking trait is listening open-mindedly to opposing points of view and welcoming criticisms of beliefs and assumptions. I believe that this is my strongest critical thinking trait because I have exhibited it throughout my life for the most part and I believe that it has helped me develop more like a human. A great exemplification of this critical thinking trait has been when I am approached by religious individuals when they ask which church I attend, if I am pro-life or if I have affiliations with the LGBTQ community.

They then get what I would call agitated or tense because I tell them that I do not attend a church, that I am pro-choice, and that I have many friends and families who are part of the LGBTQ community. I also believe I am strong in the critical thinking trait which is being skilled at understanding, analyzing, and evaluating arguments and viewpoints. Therefore when an obvious controversial topic such as this comes into a conversation between me and other religious individuals I like to stay open-minded and take into consideration how they analyze the bible as well as which version they read because some do vary based on their religion. I try not to judge or argue before I have heard their reasons for criticizing me. I accept many of their criticisms because I keep in mind an important lesson from the bible that I learned, “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”- (1 James 2:24 King James Version).

I have been blessed even with my way of belief because God says to love one another and show devoutness to his words through action and not just faith. Moreover, I attempt to do my best like everyone else but I do have my faults. My weakest critical thinking traits are that I can be easily distracted and cannot zero in on the essence of an issue or problem and tend to engage in “groupthink” in certain circumstances. Sadly most of the time when I exemplify these two traits, they intertwine. A great example of this, for me, is when I had to attend a student governance board meeting and we were in groups and provided with a hypothetical prompt where we had to choose which three out of ten prisoners provided we had to suggest for parole. I was unable to choose any of the three that I would put up for parole because I believed all their crimes to be heinous but the exercise required it so instead of just evaluating with decision-making skills and assigning a number to their crimes as I have learned in this course so far, I decided to go with what my group had chosen so that I was not the only one without a response. Instead of deciding for myself because I could have assigned a quantitative value to each individual but decided not to and that is something I still work on today.
