Genetically engineered to be a marrow donor for her sick sister. Anna Fitzgerald has endured numerous surgeries and medical procedures in the short amount of time she's been alive. The unorthodox decision of Anna's parents has resulted in a massive crack in their entire family's foundation. When Anna sues her parents for emancipation, it starts a court case that threatens to destroy the family forever. The theme that stood out to me was how easily a child's human rights can be taken away since the moment she was born.
We also see the theme that life is about making decisions that are not always easy.
When watching the movie and seeing that the reason Anna was born, was to be a donor for her sick sister really broke my heart because if her sister wasn't sick Anna would most likely not have been born. Most babies are accidents, not me. I was engineered, born to save my sisters life. Kate, Anna's sister has renal failure from a very rare form of leukemia.
Annas parents expected Anna to donate her kidney to Kate with no input or consideration for Anna's feelings. This is the same situation as when she underwent surgeries, had many blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants to help Kate.
However Anna has had enough of being forced against her own will to do all these things for her sister, which are sometimes extremely painful and Anna just has to put up with it or her mother will use the "your killing your sister" sentance to make her feel bad.
This shows that all Anna's basic rights have been taken away by even her own mother since the moment she was born. Anna's mum believed what she was doing was right as she wanted to do anything to save her first born. However this was completely unethical and when Anna started to fight back and files a lawsuit against her parents wanting medical emancipation it started to cause cracks in the family.
While Anna's suing her parents and trying to get the rights to her own body I also found the theme of finding your own identity."I didn't want to see her because it would make me feel better. I came because without her, it's hard to remember who I am and As we got older, I didn't seem to exist, except in relation to her". Both these quotes give us the insight that identity is an issue for Anna over the course of the movie. She wants to be her own person, not just known as "Cancer girl's sister". By refusing to donate her kidney Anna has the chance to become her own person as she will be able to play sports, drink alcohol and live her own life. Anna thinks of herself as a monster
Another theme i found was that life is about making choices that are not always easy and to know the difference between right and wrong. In the movie there are many difficult decisions that are made. During our lives these decisions will either build relationships or break them. Sometimes to get what you want the most, you have to do what you want the least.
