My Motivation to Study Chemical Engineering At University

Categories: EngineeringUniversity

After contemplating what career path was best suited to my skill set, I came across a video showing the problems with the world today. Conflict. Global warming. War. They were all consuming our world and consuming our resources. I wanted to help. I wanted to make a difference, no matter how little. Then I came across this field. Chemical Engineering. An industry based on improving the world, with energy efficiency as one of its mains goals.

After further research, listening to lectures my mind dived into the possibilities of human endeavor and how it was possible to make something of such significant value out of raw materials.

The topics covered such as utilization of carbon or systems-thinking left me in fascination with many questions left unanswered. This, intertwined with how it takes the fundamentals of chemistry and perfectly weaves in the world around us to mold a variety solutions is what I believe separates the field from all other branches of Science and Engineering.

I am currently taking my A-levels studying: Maths, Chemistry and Business, after already achieving a grade A in AS Biology. These subjects challenge the depths of knowledge and give the individual studying them a better understanding of the world works around us. All the subjects mentioned above have influenced me in my decision to take on a challenge as big as this one, pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering.

I recognize that maths is a cornerstone to success in such fields such as chemical engineering and am therefore striving to widen my knowledge on how to apply the problem and equation solving learned in this field, to my degree.

Chemistry was a subject I always enjoyed and found interesting. It has definitely improved my understand of chemical reactions on a much smaller scale. Everything from enthalpy changes to rates and reactions, have been a testing and developing learning experience. I was very fond of the subject in my later years of secondary education, always volunteering to be a student mentor, staying after school 3 days a week to help the year 7 and 8s, develop their understanding and to help them change their negative attitude towards sciences as a whole. I aspired for them to view chemistry the way I did, as I believe many pupils come in to chemistry lessons with a closed mind, so I continuously shared my views on how it helped the world around us.

Business was a subject that was completely different to the other two, being less theory based and heavily involving the ever-changing world around us. We learn how to take calculated risks, as well as different types of problems which may arise such as how the overuse of fuels will affect the economy, as well strategic ways to lower costs of manufacturing and obtaining these materials. I believe this mix of subjects have given me many skills which I could benefit from in the engineering field.

Participating in sports teams regularly for both college and outside college, as well as being a manager for my younger cousins football team, has shown me to be reliable and responsible. This highlights my commitment and ability to overcome tactical adversity which could be key in solving the problem that arise within this degree. Also, this shows that I am good working as a team, but can also take control when necessary.

Additionally, after undertaking work experience at a pharmacy I was able to see the other side of chemistry and how it affects the real world. I could witness first-hand the positive impact it had on people's lives. After reading further into thermodynamics, I came across a thesis and a book written by David MacKay I can see that preventing climate chaos will require sophisticated social, economic and technological choices. This provided me with a solid foundation of understanding the complex issues of energy supply and use.

Chemical engineering is an exciting field which I feel I am ready to study. I believe it will be able new challenge and hope to undertake it at university.
