Can you think of a specific moment in your life that you would say defined it? A moment so intense that you knew that it would stick with you for the rest of your life? One that determines the true course of our character, purpose, and response to life. There are five very important life altering moments that has shaped me into the person that I am today.
I will start from the beginning. I was a mostly sheltered, but still an incredibly well rounded ten-year-old little girl when my parents decided to get a divorce.
Most of the events during the course of my parents’ divorce is a little hazy. I would imagine that is my sub-conscious trying to block out bad memories considering it was a nasty and ugly divorce. I was the middle man of my parents abuse towards one another. The two people I loved more than anyone in the world were trying to tear one another apart at any and all expenses.
I learned what jealousy and heartbreak can bring out in a person. A lot of pain is attached to this moment in my life and I would denote it as the turning point in my life. I slowly started onto the road of my own self destruction. When I was 15 years old I decided to move in with my drug addicted father. My mother fought tooth and nail to try and to get me back into a safe environment. I was a completely out of control teen that could have not been more lost in life.
I sought love and the need to feel wanted. I guess you could say I was the definition of “daddy issues.”
I met a boy three years older than me, and nine months later, nine days shy of my 18th birthday, came my second life defining moment. I gave birth to a chunky dark colored hair little boy named Mavrick Todd. He made me a mom. I married Mavrick’s dad and things were great until there were not. We ultimately divorced when Mavrick was three years old. I descended back into a decline of self-destruction mode. That is until I met James Edward Keller, my third defining moment. James and I got married and started building a life together. Together we had a little boy, Isaac, and, a little girl, Memrie Sue. James also had two kids from a previous relationship. I went from a single mother of one to a mother of five rather quickly.
The fourth defining moment in my life was my decision to go back to school. I had bartended for several years until my husband told me one day “You are so much more than a bartender. You should go back to school.” Here we are with five children and I am thinking he has lost his rabid mind. With his encouragement I quit my job and threw myself into my studies full time. I knew that this decision would change not only mine, but my family’s life’s trajectory. I knew that if I could do this I would show my children and future grandchildren that anything is possible. I applied for the Surgical Technologist program and was accepted. During that time that I was accepted I was finishing up a required basic nursing class. That is when it hit me. I realized my passion was for nursing. I changed my major and am still currently chipping away at my goal.
The fifth defining moment in my life is also the saddest moment of my life. I will try to keep this one short and sweet to keep from getting tear stains on this paper. January 26, 2018 is the day that my paw paw passed away. My paw paw was my biggest heroes and was one of the most impactful influences in my life. He was the man that deserved all the credit for my successes. On that day in January my worst nightmare became a reality. The pain was immeasurable, and his loss irreplaceable.
These five very important life altering moments helped shape me into the person that I am today. The ugly divorce of my parents, teen pregnancy and marriage, meeting my soul mate, making the brave decision to go back to school, and the death of my grandfather all had a part in making me who I am today. The good, the bad, and the ugly all have their purpose in this life that we live. It is us that decides how these moments will define us. These moments have shown me the true course of my character, purpose, and responses to life.
