My Experience of Learning English Language

Teachers encourage us to ask questions, they used to give us practice through Debates, Essay writing competitions. These activities helped us with fluency and pronunciation. Teachers stressed reading more and more books; we had a library period in this class we were free to read any book of our interest. we had to give a review on that book also by this I learned to convey my ideas without thinking its grammatically correct or not teachers were strict towards grammar but they were trained in a good way that they usually not interrupt us during activity classes.

The medium of teaching was English. In science, social and other subjects, grammar was not so concerned.

Therefore, our teachers give importance to concept clearance. This helped a lot. As I moved to my country Pakistan the medium of teaching was Urdu there we just take English as a subject there. Teachers were not so cooperative, they discourage student participation usually but in my case, this happened that I was good in English comparing to my class.

I was able to read the text very well and understand it. My teachers used to ask me questions and to demonstrate different stories in front of the class. This gave me encouragement. As syllabus was not so tough, and there was no extra study of language or activities related to English after two to three years I felt my learning is not progressing I was just stuck on the same pattern, learning nothing new.

Teachers were just stuck to the syllabus, and they gave a lot of text copying as homework.

I had no time left for reading or learning new things I was just busy with copying text the whole day. We were taught by memorizing grammatical rules, learning by heart long lists of declensions and conjugations along with vast amounts of un-contextualized translations of, often, and unrelated sentences. The method was teacher centred. In vacations, there was a lot of written work to do. These were the hurdles I had to face. As these were the problems faced by me, but I wanted to learn the language so I tried hard to get fluency and accuracy. One of the major sources of learning English was the newspaper. I used to read newspapers and listening to English News. This was the only way for me to learn English. In college the situation was different students had to do their work at their own teacher was just a helper or guide. I had to search about different topics related to literature. Reading different types of novels, essays, short stories etc. helped me in learning English. I always wish to know more and more about people and places. I love to read Biographies. English is the language of the modern world and almost every good literary work is in English or if it's not in English its translation is available in English. This hobby helps me to develop my vocabulary and comprehending skill.
