My Compassion And Determination to Succeed in Medicine

Categories: CareerCompassion

I have wanted to study medicine for a long time now and originally applied when taking my A levels. Unfortunately, I did not get the correct grade in Chemistry, so was unable to take up the place that I was offered. Not to be deterred I decided I would study Biomedical Science to expand my knowledge of the human body and try again as a graduate. I am now in my final year at the University of Sheffield. One of the modules I am currently studying is entitled “Patients as Educators”.

I have been assigned three patients with Multiple Sclerosis and by talking to these patients I will complete a literature review. This will allow me to use theory from lectures in a clinical setting, improving my communication and empathy skills whilst providing valuable experience that will serve me well in a medical career.

To get some insight into caring for patients, I have worked in a care home for the elderly in Lancashire.

This was originally as a volunteer whilst I was doing my A levels, but over the past year I been employed as a paid bank care assistant during my university holidays. I have now done over 300 hours, working both day and night shifts. As a care assistant I am fully involved in all aspects of caring for the 25 residents in the home, and although at times it can be challenging I do enjoy it. I help with all necessary domestic duties, such as cleaning and bed-making as I want to ensure that the home is a comfortable and pleasant place for the residents to live in.

I assist the residents with their personal care, including washing and toileting, although this can sometimes be embarrassing for both parties I treat them with respect and dignity, trying to maintain their privacy as much as possible. I aid some of the residents with eating and drinking, taking particular care with residents who may find it difficult to swallow, ensuring they don’t choke whilst also making sure they enjoy their food. I try and take time to socialize with the residents, one resident likes to teach me bits of German. I am used to answering with patience, the same question many times, as some of the residents are forgetful. I now know that not everyone is grateful or pleasant but still needs to be cared for and provided with the necessary assistance, which requires professionalism and a certain degree of detachment. I have observed this is in the experienced care home staff and the GPs and district nurses who visit the home and have tried to develop this myself. It has also allowed me to experience the workings of a multidisciplinary team and the important role that each person plays in order to uphold the highest possible standard of care.

I am a member of the University trampolining club. I enjoy trampolining as I find it an excellent source of exercise and a good way of relieving stress. I try and attend the club twice a week if possible, and the sessions usually involve learning new skills and set routines I perform. I have competed in both Varsity and inter-university competitions, and whilst I have not won individually, I contributed to my team coming away with a victory.

I also enjoy the social aspect of being a member of this club and actively participate in the various nights out and social events that are arranged, including socializing with other university teams after competitions, and taking part in charity events. I was recently part of a trampolining charity subcommittee, through which I helped organize a ‘bounce-a-thon’ for the charity Mind. I also play intra-mural football for the Biomedical Society women’s team and am currently the team captain. This has involved trying to motivate the team, deciding on tactics and organizing our fixtures. Although we may not be the most successful team, we take pride in finishing the game with a smile on our face, maintaining a positive attitude and sportsmanship.

I believe my experiences demonstrate that I have the resilience, intelligence, compassion and determination to succeed in medicine.
