My Central Goal to Continue My Education in Data Science

Ever since mankind has set out for the establishment of civilization, two things have remained constant. One of these two is learning. Man learns through experiences and this experience provides insight to the future generations to enhance their standard of living. But amidst all of this learning, a very crucial resource has been overlooked throughout history, a resource so powerful that when exploited wisely, it has the power to change the nature of civilization. Raw data and its changing nature, is key for solving many complex problems that humanity faces today.

The implications of Natural disasters, Epidemic diseases and the economic crunch can be greatly minimized if we know where we’re heading based on our past experiences. Ever since the industrial revolution in Europe, Oil has been the most valuable natural resource but now there's another big player in the market: Raw Data. I am extremely passionate about understanding data and extracting meaningful information out of its behavior. Rapid developments in the field of Information Technology have left me fascinated with Data Science.

The rapid change in IT Industry and being a Business Intelligence & Program Management Engineer I can feel the immense importance of data science in the near future and hence it is my central goal to continue my education in Data Science from your esteemed University which can provide a more competitive, elite, and international environment.

During my undergraduate studies at Institute of Engineering & Management, I was excited by the diversity of the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

During my bachelor program, the courses like Signals and Systems, Microprocessors and Microcontroller, VLSI Technology and Embedded System helped me to learn the aspects of system implementation. On the other hand, courses like Data Structure, Operating System, C, C++, R, Digital Image Processing, MATLAB helped me to understand how the concepts of computers are applied to practical systems in day-to-day life. I used to take part in different autonomous robotics competition in India and made different types of robots which could solve a lot of complex tasks. My final year project was related to image processing where I used several tools and algorithms of Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning .We successfully detected and removed brain tumor from MRI images by using Quincunx wavelet and Fuzzy K-Means algorithm. The project was heavily appreciated by the review committee and awarded highest possible grade (Later it was published in IOSR Journal of Engineering). I rate the four years of study at the engineering college among the best years of my life as I spent a lot of time in the computer laboratory learning programming languages, grasping the core concepts of Artificial Intelligence & Robotics and also the hardware technology and the components that make up a smart robot.

I have been working as a system engineer in Tata Consultancy Services LTD since 1st December 2016. Here I have learnt Java, SQL, PLSQL, Informatica, Data Warehousing, UNIX Shell Scripting, SAP-BO and Python. Later, based on my data warehousing and business intelligence skills, I was selected for Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited project (Leading Fashion & Retail Chain in India). During these two years, I have worked on Oracle Retail Merchandising System, Oracle Retail Invoice Matching, Store Inventory Management as an ORACLE Retail developer. I have also worked on few short term complex projects by using Informatica and SAP-BO. During this period I have worked as a key member to develop and design the database of Goods & Service Tax (GST) for Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited (ABNL). Apart from designing the database of GST, I have also worked as a quality assurance testing engineer for Aditya Birla Retail Limited (ABRL) and received appreciations from clients as well as from our functional bodies. From these projects I have come to know the immense importance of data and how they are related with each other and how the proper extraction method and usage of data set can help to enhance the productivity of business. It was during this term, I learnt the importance of team coordination and how essential it is to maintain good communication while being a team player.

Later Based on my performance I was selected Inspiring Role Model Employee and awarded with TCS GEMS.I have always lived by Aristotle’s principal that is, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” and so, have indulged myself in all sorts of extracurricular activities. It all started with me being selected as the official master of ceremony of my college to host a variety of events in the span of 4 years. This gave me enough confidence to address a large audience of hundreds of attendees and I then ventured onto performing stand-up comedy in my college. Now, after having acquired the basic aptitude skills, knowledge and work experience in the field of Business Intelligence & Program Management, I feel this is the apt time to pursue my graduate study in the field of my interest and strongly believe that my aptitude and aspirations find a terrific match in your Data Science program. Browsing the pages of your University’s website, I find myself certain that pursuing this program is the ideal step for my academic as well as professional career. After researching on the courses offered by the Department of Computer Information Systems at your University, I have decided to apply for the Master’s program in Data Science at University of Glasgow. I feel that University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Computer Science with its rich blend of competent faculty, intense curriculum and the cherished history of success would be an ideal place to shape my career.

On completion of my education at University of Glasgow, I intend to leverage my earned skills and academic learning by contributing to society and research that would revolutionize advanced analytics back in my home country, India. According to a survey, by 2020, India will face a demand-supply gap of 2,00,00 data analytics professionals. India is no doubt emerging as one of the world’s largest data science capitals, with companies like Mercedes-Benz, Walmart, PayPal and AIG setting up data science centers in the country. With these additions, the industry is expected to add between 180,000 and 200,000 new jobs, in the fields of Machine Learning and Data Science. It is for these reasons that I certainly believe that skills I would’ve acquired would be very valuable in shaping the future of my country.

I believe that “Accomplishments lie within the reach of those who reach beyond themselves”. I am confident of making my own humble contribution in enhancing the image and reputation of your Esteemed University in the years to come. It will be a great favor of your institution if I am given some kind of scholarship to pursue my study there and it will give me a tremendous morale boost in this long pursuit to achieve excellence.
