Have you ever thought about moving to a forgin country and leaving everything you love behind? Would you stay faithful to God and others even after facing many hardships? Would devote your entire life to serving God and the poor? Well, that just how mother Teresa got her name. Mother Teresa's real name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu but most people know her as just Mother Teresa. She was born in Skopje Macedonia on August 26, 1910 into an Albanian heritage. Her father was a local businessman who died when she was only eight years old.
Her mother was a religious woman who spent a lot of time in parish activity. She also opened up an embroidery and clothing business to support the family after her husband died. In September of 1928 Agnes left home to go to the convent in Rathfarnham dublin. She received the name Teresa after her patroness St. Therese of Lisieux.
She arrived in Calcutta, India on January 6, 1929, after being sent by the Loreto order.
While she was there she joined the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling. Eventually, she became a Loreto nun on May 25, 1937. In the 1930s and 40’s she was a teacher in St. Mary’s Bengali Medium School. On February 1, 1965 Pope Paul VI Granted decrees of praise to the congregation raising pontifical right. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel peace prize. After that, She returned to calcutta in 1997. She helped the poor in calcutta by starting 158 Missionaries of charity foundations and she taught a school for children. She helped many people who couldn't help themselves.
She also showed great mercy toward others by giving what she had to help people who had nothing.
One of the worst, most horrifying acts of the 20th century was the Hindo, Muslum riots of Calcutta. This also happened while Mother Teresa was helping the poor in Calcutta. It lasted several days in August of 1946, where a range from 5,000 to 20,000 were killed. In weeks and months afterward both sides still attacked each other in different Indian cities and states. The Hindu, Muslum riots were the exact opposite of Peace and justice. Peace is like being non-violent, being kind and not fighting with others. Justice is showing respect being fair and equal toward others. They go together because to have peace you have to have justice too. Two key themes she showed were caring for God's creation by serving the poor and starting many missionaries to help others.
She also had a priority to give to the poor and vulnerable because she showed great mercy for the poor by devoting her entire life to helping them. After traveling the world to help others by opening new houses and forming new communities in South Africa, Albania, Cuba, and Iraq where there was a war going on, she developed different health problems she went back to Calcutta Mother Teresa sadly died on September 5 ,1997 at 9:30 in Calcutta. But she did Many great things for the world and making it a better place for everyone. She changed many people's lives in all her work for the poor. Maybe someday you and the people she helped can too.
