Merriam-Webster, Definition of Interior Design

According to of interior design is the art or practice of planning and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their furnishings. (merriam-webster). Interior design was not my plan A, my original major was elementary education but that was something I could not see myself doing for the rest of my life. I have always been fascinated with how places and things were decorated and decided to make a career out of it. Interior Design, or interior decorators as they are also called, generates 10 billion dollars annually.

In order to become an Interior designer, I would need to go to college for four years and receive a bachelor’s degree in interior design.

An associate’s degree is acceptable but I would not be able to legally call myself an interior designer without a bachelors degree. “A bachelor’s degree is usually required and classes in interior design, drawing, and computer-aided design (CAD)” (Bureau). There are only a couple of universities in Mississippi that have an interior design program including Mississippi State University, The University of Southern Mississippi, and Mississippi College.

I plan on going to Mississippi College in the spring to further my interior design education. I was originally going to go to Mississippi State for Education but from working with children for a year and a half I realized I would not be able to do that for the rest of my life and started doing some deep thinking on what I would like to do instead.

I found myself spending days looking at things like furniture or I always found myself in stores like Home Good or Pier 1 imagining what I would be like to have my own home to decorate. The reason that I’m so interested in designing my future home is because I never felt like I had a home. I love my mom but I don’t really fit in with any of my siblings on either side of my family so I don’t know what a “home” feels like and that’s why I’m so into dreaming about my future one. “In some states, only licensed designers may do interior design work. In other states, both licensed and unlicensed designers may do such work; however, only licensed designers may use the title “interior designer.” In still other states, both licensed and unlicensed designers may call themselves interior designers and do interior design work” (Bureau).

I plan on being a licensed interior designer and getting fully certified. In certain states you are required to pass the National council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ). One of the best states to live in for interior designers is Florida. I haven’t thought very much into where I want to live yet but I don’t think it will be anywhere in the south. The Interior Design program is expected to grow only four percent in the next decade. Interior design is most popular in states like Florida and California and not as popular in states like Mississippi. “Job prospects should be better in high-income areas, because wealthy clients are more likely than others to engage in remodeling and renovating their spaces.” (Bureau). Higher class income families or people are more likely to hire an interior designer than lower- or middle-class families because higher-income families have less time and more money oppose to middle or low income families that have less money and more time that’s why it’s more popular in states like California.

The salary for interior designers is about a middle-class salary “The median annual wage for interior designers was $51,500 in May 2017.” (Bureau). Interior Designers work in all type of environments from offices and furniture stores to self-employed workers. I would love to be an entrepreneur and open up my own interior design business instead of working in an office for other people, “Most interior designers work in offices, but technology has changed the way many designers work.” (Bureau). I would personally not like to get into the technology part of interior design because I’m not really that good with technology but with the way the generation is progressing I see interior design using technology being more and more popular. Interior design is one of the most unique jobs in the United States. It’s a very simple career to get into and you can get experience and get right into your career soon after college. A career like interior design is really good for people who are artsy and who are in love with that homey feel. I hope to succeed in my career
