William Edward Burghardt “W. E. B.” Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community. After completing high school, he briefly attended the historically black Fisk University before transferring to Harvard College.nDu Bois became the first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard in 1895. He later became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.nHe wrote several books, including The Souls of Black Folk (1903) and Black Reconstruction in America (1935). Du Bois was also a prolific essayist and newspaper editor. In his later years, he became increasingly critical of the United States, and he spent the last years of his life in Ghana, where he died in 1963.
