My leadership philosophy is that would consider leadership as an expedition consisting of followers and leaders, would stabilize my work and personal success, and would persuade people to find the best in themselves. With the same philosophy, I plan to spend time musing on my leadership and its significances on others, to value wholeness in personal and professional growth and to respect leadership from different views and ways of knowing and to listen with admiration and appreciation to others.
In nutshell, I may put it as philosophy on leadership with enthusiasm and dedication, which complement self-motivation with the basic premise that my kind of leadership must cause me to excel in what I do as a person while allowing others to benefit and prosper.
This paper seeks to analyze and discuss my leadership philosophy, by understanding its underlying assumptions and beliefs and whether the same are consistent with the related leadership methods, approaches and techniques.
In addition, this paper will determine what theories and models of adult learners would inform and support my philosophy of leadership and the reasons for these as my focus.
This paper will further discuss the evaluative criteria that I would apply in trying to judge a specific practice exemplified by my philosophy and to provide examples of indicators. The analyses and discussions will also be further tied up with a summary of what I as leader want to accomplish for myself, for my learners and for society.
The last part of the paper will explain my plan for building the continuous process of critical reflection in my future leadership practices by using the four lenses of learners’ eyes, colleagues’ perceptions, educational theory, and autobiographical experience to research my practice and challenge my assumptions.
2. 1 What are my assumptions and beliefs as a leader? I belief in collaboration and teamwork where the combined strengths of each member of a group will help overcome the individual’s weaknesses. This belief assumes that people working together have the effect to make things happen better than by single person.
This therefore presupposes a belief in the unity among diversities in talents and abilities of my followers. In a music orchestra or a band, each member has a part to play in creating a beautiful piece of music. A conductor or a lead singer standing alone would not be able to do or execute things in way that would deliver expected result when compared with a orchestra or a band performing in unity. My being leader could therefore be compared analogously to that of a conductor what will all the members of the orchestra in delivering that superb performance. I also believe in the value of vision and strategic direction to lead people to it.
In creating a vision, I need to assume that people’s interests and ideas must heard by me. By listening to people, I believe that I would consider their desires and deepest longings in the direction of vision that we would go and this would have the better effect of motivating and inspiring them with a sense of direction that would likely result to the fulfillment of some of their most important or deepest longings. My job is therefore finding unity amidst the differences. Because of this, I also believe in the power of empathy of a leader to their followers to allow such a leader to understand profoundly the needs and wants of the follower.
Related to this, a leader must enjoy the confidence and trust of followers, which can be created by keeping in view the people employed under him or her (Spatz, 1999). As I believe in diversity of interests and personalities so with diversity of situations, thus requiring my philosophy of leadership to consider a particular approach for each situation. I believe therefore in the human capacity to be flexible not only within myself as a leader but also with my would-be or present subordinates or followers, whom I consider as my co-learners in the process of my practicing leadership.
My belief therefore assumes differences in styles. In this aspect, I believe my leadership must have the capacity for changes and transactions, which create impacts on individual personality and attitude (Gronn, 1996). The presence of diversity in people must not be surprising as there is inequality in society and diversity in attitude of people, where leaders would assume more significance in trying bringing unity of purpose for collective gain (Harter, et. al 2006).
I also believe in social thoughtfulness so that my co-learners or subordinates also human who deserved to be treated with respect and understanding (Berry, and Cartwright, 2000). This is consistent with critical social theory, which is rather self-reflective. Finally, as a believer in people there is basis in understanding them and including in setting direction or vision than to be understood by them (Covey, 1989). Strength lies in consensus building as long as the same is consistent with organizational objective. An assumption of purpose therefore becomes a necessary part of the process.
