Jeanne d’Arc was a peasant girl who became a national heroine and the patron saint of France. She was born in Domremy and Meuse in 1412. She was a religious girl praying God and trying to be a good Christian. When she was only twelve she started to claim that she could speak to God and she had a holy fate. As she became older the voices she heard and the images she saw went on increasing.
One day a miracle happened to change all my life.
When I first heard the voice of the Almighty who will guide me, I was 13 years old, and the first time I had a great fear and anxiety. When I was in my father’s garden on a summer’s day, I heard his voice around noon. I fasted the day before. The sound came from the right side of the church. At the same time, in the direction of the sound, the great divine being appeared in the light.
With strong light, sound came from the same direction. And after hearing the same voice for the third time, I realized that it belonged to an angel (Saint Michael) That voice always directed me. The voice commanded me not to leave the right path and often go to church.(Yuknavitch)
She believed to save her country and she had to make the monarch get the crown in Rheims Cathedral. That was the task given from God. Both the society she lived in and her family thought that these ideas were crazy.
Although her father tried to persuade her daughter Jean de Arc he could not be successful. When she became 16, she went to Robert Baudricourt’s castle and asked him to give herself a soldier. Robert was a simple soldier and did not believe her story as he thought that he sent her back too her village and told her not to deal with such nonsense things. However, Jean strongly believed her inspiration by heart that she convinced Robert and got the soldiers. In 1429 she disguised as a man and went to Chinon with the soldiers near her. The King Karl Sarl was very upset and helpless. Thus she persuaded the king that she was his illegitimated daughter. In the arena of the war she encouraged all of the french soldiers and with the help of this young rustic girl.
The main victory came with the capturing of the Tourelles Castle which from the beginning seemed very difficult to take over. She completed her mission and wore the crown with a glittering anniversary. Jeanne reached her victory but Paris was still under English oppression. Her determination was to save Paris. She tried to do her best but unfortunately captivated by the Duke of Luksemburg. She was judged in inquisition because of the reasons that hearing voices and seeing images were satanic, she was a witch, wearing mans clothes was insulting to womankind, speaking to God without taking permission from the church was insolence. In the end Jeanne was forced to sign a document in which she totally accepted all of the accusations about herself and abused burning alive. Her innocence was proclaimed and her good name restored. In 1920, Jeanne was canonized, and her feast day, July 10, declared a national holiday in France. She became the spirit of France, the maiden, the holy warrior, the Republican and Napoleonic symbol.
Christine De Pizan is known the first woman of letters in France and the first woman in Europe to earn her living by writing.She was a prolific, versatile, and acclaimed lyric poet, didactic writer, and humanist scholar. She was born in Venice in 1364.Her father was astrologer, alchemist, and physician working for nobles. Christine was grown up in a literally cultured home full of intellectuals. She studied the liberal arts with the suggestion of her father whose intelligence and knowledge she admired. However her mother thought that academic learning was not approval for girls. Christine started to think that her education was prohibited because of her gender but she was able to learn to read and write.She realized that opportunities were generally for very high-ranking women.
At the age fifteen she got married to a twenty four year old graduate scholar who was born as a noble. After some years Christine had lost both her father and husband who were the two people to whom she was very close. These unexpected deaths were the turning point in Christine’s life which she later referred to her Mutacion de Fortune a book of that name. At the age of twenty she had to take the role of man on her shoulder although she had no income and means of support to continue her life. She chose to be alone rather than passing under an authority of a man. She describes this situation in her a famous ballade, written shortly after her husband’s death “Seulete suy et seulete vueil estre, I am alone and I want to be alone.”( Pizan)This was the first step of her becoming a feminist writer.
Jean De Meun was a poet who was born in Meung, Paris and he took the name of the city he was born in. It was certain today that he was from wealthy family and received a good education. He was a religious man. He spent most of his time in Paris. He reflected his own ideas about the universe, life, religion and the morality in his works. He had anti feministic attention and this created a quarrel between him and another feminist writer Christine De Pizan. Although there is very little information about his life I could reach the information that he was very intellectual who knows both Latin And French and made translations. He was known as a poet who completed the poem Roman de La Rose. He was a satirist poet who thought women were not idealized creatures of courtly poetry and often treated them with disrespect. This caused some literary controversy, and he was accused by some taking part in anti-feminism.
Christine’s rebuke of Meun stirred their proprietary feelings, along with some irritation at her woman’s audacity. She was a feminine interloper in an exclusively masculine discourse, one that flourished between the secretaries and the authors they admired, on the one hand, and among the members of their own group, on the other. The literary practice they represented had never hesitated to write about women, though it rarely did so with the expectation that women themselves might be its respondents. Now the Epistre and the Dit would invite their public, one that Christine well knew included other women, to scrutinize the Roman, and to do so in a critical way. As the book’s name implies it is Jeanne who is at the center of the novel and who symbolizes purpose, destruction, hope, recreation in this story. The protagonist Jeanne is a reimage of Jeanne De Arc. Although the story of Jeanne in our novel is partly similar to the real one ,her light is very different and unique. First and foremost the year that the story goes through is coming future,2049. The world is now a dead piece of land moving through space. Jeanne who is at the age of twelve, hears some parts of songs and at these moments a blue dot appears between his her ear and her temple.”Joan walked over to her mother, still panting from running. Her mother touched the glowing blue light between her right eye and her ear. “Sweetheart?” her mother whispered. “Honey, what . . .” She fingered Joan’s temple. “What happened to your head here?” (Yuknavitch,47) Similar to the main character in the history, we see Jeanne in the role of superhuman who has supernatural powers.
