Is Our Society Too Dependent on Technology?

Capistrano (2016) reports that, “According to www.debate.org, a very big percentage of their respondents believe that humans are becoming too dependent on technology. Based on this poll question: “have people become overly dependent on technology?” 84% said Yes and 16% said No” (1).

Today’s society is dependent on technology and it’s creating most people (especially the younger generation) to not be able to survive without it. Everywhere you look people are intrigued toward some type of technology.

For instance: a cell phone, GPS, computer, television, etc.

these items can be resourceful but it causes a major concern if you are not cautious. For example, if you are focusing on your phone while you are walking or driving it can cause an accident. Using a GPS for directions can sometimes cause you to get lost (rerouting) or go through a one way street if the system is not updated.

Using a computer or playing a video game all day, can cause eye strains.

In addition, children like to mirror what they see on the television and are likely to imitate violence because they believe that TV fiction is real and accept what they see. If parents are not cautious and enforce parental control their children will act out on their behavior and will test adults to see what they can get away with.

In conclusion, technology is a resourceful tool in today’s society. However, everyone should be more cautious and try to not depend on technology as an only resource. Keep in mind there can always be a blackout and how would people survive if they are too dependent on technology.
