Due to the roles played by nurses in achieving healthcare goals, it is important to implement strategies meant to improve their responsibilities as their performance has a direct connection to healthcare goals (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017). Nurses form a large population in the healthcare workforce which makes them important in achieving healthcare goals. The Institute of Medicine report was released in 2010 focusing on the changing healthcare needs across different populations and the responsibilities of the nursing workforce to address these changes (Finkelman & American Nurses Association, 2017). Some of the recommendations include allowing nurses to practice to their full extent of their training and education. Before this report, some of the advanced nurses would not be allowed to perform certain functions without supervision from their seniors regardless of the training that the nurses had undergone (Morris, 2014). This would limit the nurses in performing some of the important functions that would enhance healthcare delivery taking into account the nursing shortage currently experienced.

Another recommendation involves increasing the education and training level that nurses should have which focuses on improving the education system (Morris, 2014). This will also allow nurses to continue with their training throughout their lives in the aim of enhancing their knowledge through current and evidence-based research (Morris, 2014). The third recommendation focuses on allowing nurses to collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals in the aim of enhancing the decision-making process which would play an important role in redesigning healthcare in the United States (Morris, 2014). The achievement of healthcare goals is the result of the performance of different departments in a healthcare facility which means that a failure in one area will affect the final outcomes in the facility. Collaborating with one another will allow members to address any challenges experienced in one area ultimately leading to a high performance (Morris, 2014). The last recommendation aims at involving nurses in the policy-making process where nurses are given an opportunity to develop effective solutions to address some of the issues affecting healthcare delivery. This is attributed to the fact that nurses are better positioned due to their interact with patients and the public in the delivery of healthcare services (Morris, 2014). The role of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative and the American Association of Retired Persons on the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action and the State Based Action CoalitionsThe Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative and the American Association of Retired Persons have joined forces in transforming healthcare in the United States by supporting the implementation of the IOM recommendations (Wood, 2015). The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation played an important role in launching the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health that was aimed at transforming the healthcare system by implementing changes in nursing care (Wood, 2015). This foundation is dedicated to improve healthcare in the United States by focusing on different aspects of healthcare. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative focuses on developing a healthcare system that will allow American citizens to access quality and affordable healthcare which would ultimately improve the health status of the American citizens (Wood, 2015). The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative is also aimed at helping states in preparing their nursing profession in the aim of addressing some of the healthcare challenges that may affect the quality and cost of healthcare delivery (Wood, 2015). This is based on the changing healthcare needs where nurses should be prepared to address future healthcare needs. The American Association of Retired Persons has also launched a campaign for action to implement IOM's recommendations in different states and support Action Coalitions (Wood, 2015). This provides nurses with the necessary resources required in implementing the desired changes. This initiative supports Action Coalitions by providing them with grants to enable them to successfully implement the IOM recommendations. Other support includes strategic and technical support which is also necessary in achieving the desired goals (Wood, 2015). The Importance of the IOM FON Report Related To the Nursing WorkforceThe IOM FON report is important to the nursing workforce by providing recommendations to enhance their roles and responsibilities in achieving healthcare goals. This includes removing any barriers that restrict nurses to perform to their full extent an aspect that previously prevented nurses to carry out certain responsibilities (Grabois, 2012). Due to the current nursing shortage, this has negatively affected the achievement of healthcare goals. This is further worsened by the changing healthcare needs and increasing demand which led to the development of the IOM report which is aimed at preparing the nursing workforce for some of the expected future changes (Grabois, 2012). This report will help nurses in integrating these recommendations in their profession that will enhance their performance as well as the achievement of healthcare goals across the nation. The intent of the Future of Nursing Campaign for ActionThe RWJN, AARP, and the IOM have joined forces to create the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action where these organizations support the implementation of IOM recommendations in different states across the United States. (Rowitz, 2014). These organizations are dedicated in ensuring that the health of the Americans is improved by focusing on improving different aspects of health. One of these aspects is the implementation of the IOM recommendations in the aim of transforming healthcare delivery in the nation (Rowitz, 2014). These organizations collaborate with other agencies in ensuring that healthcare goals are effectively achieved. The AARP plays a role of ensuring that healthcare facilities have the required number of nurses which is one of the recommendations of the IOM report (Rowitz, 2014). The Rationale of State-Based Action CoalitionsThe state-based action coalitions are responsible for ensuring that the IOM recommendations are implemented at a state and local/community levels. These coalitions also carry out advocacy services for the communities by allowing representatives from the community to participate in the implementation process which is aimed at building healthier communities (Rowitz, 2014). These coalitions also monitor the progress of the IOM recommendations implementation process addressing any challenges experienced during this process. With the coalitions having community representatives, they are able to effectively address any issues within different communities that may prevent a successful implementation process (Rowitz, 2014). One State-Based Action Coalition and Two InitiativesOne of the state-based action coalitions is the Maryland Action Coalition which is focused at transforming healthcare in the Maryland state through the implementation of the IOM recommendations in the nursing profession (Campaign for Action, 2019). This is ultimately intended to improve the health of the Maryland citizens. This coalition also recognizes the achieved progress and ways of sustaining these changes to ensure a long-term change (Campaign for Action, 2019). One of the initiatives of Maryland Action Coalition is improving access to healthcare services where all citizens of Maryland will be able to access quality healthcare services. This will be achieved by the coalition campaigning for a conducive working environment which is important in employee satisfaction. (Campaign for Action, 2019). This will enable the available nurses to work effectively which will address the nursing shortage allowing patients to easily access healthcare services from all healthcare facilities. A second initiative involves building healthier communities which a common initiative for all state coalitions (Campaign for Action, 2019). The main aim of the IOM recommendations is to improve the health of all American citizens by improving the delivery of healthcare in all states. This initiative can be achieved by focusing on different aspects that impact the nursing profession and developing effective strategies to enhance the nursing profession (Campaign for Action, 2019).
